Guys, can I install Win2k server as DC to existing PDC on WInNT4, give the
same name, and then move PDC to BDC on NT4 and manualy enter all users to DC
on Win2K server? (not that many)
I guess I don't need to add computers?

I know it would be easier install first WinNT4 on new server and then
upgrade it to Win2k
but I have problem with that.
thanks

You can not "move PDC to BDC" you have to promote a BDC to PDC and your
existing PDC is automatically demoted.

What are you trying to do? Upgrade your existing NT domain or create a new
domain from scratch?

A Win 2k DC and a NT 4.0 PDC can NEVER be in the SAME domain.

When you run dcpromo you are asked if this is the first DC in the domain. If
you say no, you will be required to point the Win 2k DC to and Active
Directory DC or the install will fail.
If you say yes, you will be creating a NEW domain. The PDC of your existing
NT domain holds the only writeable copy of the SAM. If you do not upgrade
your existing PDC first you will not carry the NT 4.0 SAM into the Win 2k
domain.
Upgrading *any* *other* BDC/Member server (NT 4.0 BDC/member server or Win
2k member server) will result in the creation of a new SAM. New SAM = new
domain.
Even if you name the domains the same the SAM is different and it will be
seen as a new domain.

Basically you either upgrade to Win 2k
See:
How To: Upgrade Windows NT Server 4.0 to Windows 2000 Server

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;298107

or migrate to Win 2k

See:

How to Set Up ADMT for Windows NT 4.0 to Windows 2000 Migration

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260871

If you don't have that many users you may be able to follow the migration
path up to the point where you migrate your users, but in your case you
would manually enter the users.

This may work depending on if you want the domain name to be the same or
not. Migration depends on you setting up the NT 4.0 domain and the Win 2k
domain "side by side" on the same wire. If they have the same name you will
have problems.

Basicaly I want to add new server(Win2k) to old PDC on NT4 and promote it to
DC with current PDC as BDC.

thanks for links

What you can do is create a new Win2k domain with a slightly different
NetBIOS name and a good multi-label DNS name (you must have a " . " in the
name like something.something)
Create a trust between the domains. Then use ADMT to migrate all user and
computer accounts to the new domain. This would be the easiest and best way,
the only thing that must change is the NetBIOS name. User accounts and
profiles are migrated so you don't have anyone hollering at you "where's my
stuff"

Thanks Kevin, your solution looks very convinient.
I understand that after creating new DC on Win2k with different netbios
name,
I create trust between old domain on WinNT4 and I use ADMT to migrate users
and staff, and then what? Can I demote old PDC to BDC on WinNT4 ? I'd like
to have
BCD as backup to new server. Can I after that exchange new domain bios name
with old domain not to have to change anything in clients machines?

thank's a lot

Nt4 PDCs and BDCs cannot be demoted to members or standalone, unless you
upgrade them to Win2k.
Because the old NT4 domain is no longer needed it is kind of up to you, if
you are still using it as a file server, you can upgrade the NT4 boxes to
Win2k and join them to the Win2k domain as members or replica Domain
Controllers. Once you have created the Win2k domain and migrated all the
accounts it does not matter what you do with the NT4 boxes, they no longer
take part in domain authentication. If they are on good hardware I'd at
least upgrade them to Win2k members.

You wouldn't need to revert to the old NetBIOS name, you couldn't anyway
with Win2k. You won't have to change anything on the clients, they will
automatically take up the new DNS domain name, in Win2k Netbios is pretty
much just religated to Network Places. There are some minor functions of
NetBIOS in Win2k domains, but Win2k uses DNS for domain controller location.
The only problem you may see is if you are using DFS shares on the NT4
boxes. Since DFS shares use the domain name once the old NT4 domain was gone
so would the DFS shares. You haven't said anything about using DFS shares so
it probably would not affect you.

I think I got it now. Assuming that old PDC name is "ABC" I can give new DC
on Win2k
server name e.g "ABC.local" and then clients would pick up "ABC" as usual.
right? After I disconnect old PDC of cource. I understand I cannot demote
old PDC to BDC to have backup.
thanks

If the NT4 domain is ABC you have to give the Win2k's NetBIOS domain a
different NetBIOS name so you can establish trust. What you can do is change
the NT4 Domain name to ABCD then promote the Win2k with the NetBIOS name ABC
(DNS name ABC.local) establish the trust between the NT4 ABCD domain and
Win2k ABC.local domain migrate the accounts then you are set.
