Ok, I have a router and modem its like a 2 in 1 type deal and the company is brighthouse. It is located into my dinning room and i want to move it to my room. But my mom said that it will never work but i feel like their is a way that it could work. It has 2 cords that it uses to function, one is just one that goes in the wall like if you plug your phone up to charge and the other is one that you screw in the wall its a white long cord that has 2 screwy things at each end. (im bad with wires) I have one of those in my room and i have a plug in... I was thinking if i could just move the whole thing in my room and it still work like it would in the dinning room or will it mess up anything? Can i hook it up by myself? Do i have to pay for someone to do it?

Solution

Some pics would be helpful.

So the first cord sounds like it's power. The second cord sounds like coax.

If it looks like that, it's coax. And more than likely you have a cable modem. If the coax outlet in your room is hooked up to the cable connection outside (no reason it shouldn't be unless someone cut it), then yes you can move the router into...
Another I want router in my room thread.

Yes you should pay someone to do this for you, IF it's do-able at all. That way, the "Master of the house" issue, which you seems to ignore, is resolved. I am not able to give you a yes or no answer based on vague "2 screwy things" and when I tell you option 2 is to go MOCA and you don't know what I am talking about and even if you WIKI it, you won't know what you are reading.

Pay somebody to do it.

If the coax outlet in your room is hooked up to the cable connection outside (no reason it shouldn't be unless someone cut it), then yes you can move the router into your room and it will work fine. Just unscrew the coax cable from the dining room outlet, and screw it into the outlet in your room. If your outlet is connected, the router will still pick up an Internet signal.

I assume everyone else connects to it wirelessly? As long as your room is near the center of the house, their wireless connections should not be affected. If you live in a 2-story house, the wifi signal from these things is weakest directly above and below. So it might not work so well if your room is directly above the room where most people use wifi (e.g. living room or TV room).

But my mom said...

And why should you have primary control and connection to this? Is the account in your name? Do you pay the bill?

If you're asking these questions, you don't know enough about how the house is wired.
Is it possible? Sure. Anything can be rewired.
Can you 'just move it'? Completely unknown. Depends on the house wiring.

My answer is "probably".

Honestly, I would just move it and try to see if it works. If it doesnt, then you can always move it back.

Or you could always call up Brighthouse and ask them.
