Moving Windows 10 across devices

Hello Tom's Hardware community, my first time posting here, but I'll get to the subject right away!

I currently own a Asus G55WV gaming laptop (i7 3610QM @ 2,3 Ghz. and GTX 660M @ 2GB) and I'm looking forward to upgrading to a desktop PC in the summer. However, I have a problem: I got this laptop as a gift from a family friend who got it from a friend of his who was going to throw it away.

However, my family friend deicided to give it to me, but neither I or him have original checks and other papers, so my question is that am I still able to extract my OS from my laptop to my future desktop? I believe it originally had Windows 7 or 8 installed, but I upgraded to 10 when it was free to do.

Solution
Preinstalled OEM version of windows can't be moved they are tied to the original hardware so you will need to buy a new license when you build your new desktop.
