Every time I try to install MS Office 2007 Professional onto a new Dell Studio XPS 8100 with Win 7 (64 bit) it shuts down the computer and won't install. I've tried it from the original disk and again by a download of the trial version. Has this been a problem others have encountered? Is there a reason or cure?

Open the manager (right click my computer and then manage) navigate to the event viewer and have a poke around in the application and system sections - any red crosses or exclamation points around the time the computer shut down? Get back to us and let us know......

What antivirus/security are you running?

Iv had no problems installing it on many pc's.

Iv just got a compaq to fix, and found a few nasty files, so did a complete restore. Backed up all user files, f key to load restore and formatted the drive in its process.

Your problem sounds like corrupt files, so im recommending you do a complete restore. Remember to backup your files first.

As for AV, I'm running the McAfee that came with the computer. I'll switch when the free subscription ends.
PS - As I was typing the above, the screen went blue (with thin white vertical stripes) and the computer froze. This is my second copy of the computer (the first had bad memory) so I think that's going to end my Dell experience.

Mcafee could be the cause, so try uninstalling it then download a free antivirus such as:

Avast
AVG
Microsoft Security Essentials

If after using the freebies you still get reboots/bsods, then do a full format/recovery...

doing the same thing to me. I had to reinstall windows b/c i couldnt uninstall office. Still havent installed it. Problems occured when office sp1 was installed. I guess I'll do with out
i have an asus board and amd proc

I, too, had a problem installing Office Professional on Window Vista and then again when I upgraded to Win 7. Sometimes it just totally locked up the system and other times I would get a "bootstrapper" error message - from what I understand it's a MS issue and MS doesn't yet have a permanent fix for this although there is a "hotfix". Had read somewhere that others with similar problems were using another drive to install it, so I borrowed an external DVD from a friend and MS Office Pro installed just fine then....Intersingly the DVD on my laptop has been fine for EVERY other software I've installed.

What a pain!

I eventually just gave up, returned the Dell (which kept on shutting down), and did a clean full install on my HP 8120n. MS Office installed and works just fine now.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Try going to the Microsoft site and download a new exe. file for MS Office 2007. It's the complete program with all the features. If you have to product key, it will not be a problem. I just did it. I downloaded Office Professional 2007. That install may have a more complete (newer)? compatibility structure than the original discs. I have Windows Vista, but I have a new Lenovo with Win. 7 coming next week. We'll see.
