So my custom built PC used to have Windows 7...I upgraded to Windows 8 then to windows 8.1...all a while back.
I checked msconfig and I noticed that I had it set up for selective start up.
When it's like that and I go to the boot tab it shows Windows 8.1 as my OS...BUT
when I click on normal start up and then I click the boot tab again...it shows windows 7???
Anyone ever seen this??(I might have dual booted at some point)
I'd prefer to have this fixed, any ideas/help would be appreciated!!

Unless you are experiencing any boot related problems, I would just ignore it. You really don't want to break the MBR.

Win 8 shares a few components with Windows 7. It's compatible, you can probably just find the boot.ini file and edit the 7 to an 8. You could try creating a new boot.ini from the repair console.

Run bootrec.exe /fixmbr from CMD

I'd really prefer to fix it though...clean install isn't an option....five years worth of customizations and data.I'm familiar with the recovery console through USB and I can run commands...any guidance would be appreciated!
