MSI 275GTX OC

Hi,

could you recommend what motherboard, cpu and memory I should get for my msi 275 gtx oc video card. PC is for gaming, like upcoming bfbc2 game. Right now I run it on Pentium D930 with Intel 955XBK mobo and 2G of RAM. But I think it would be too slow for the newer games. Please advise. Budget is at medium to high level. Thank you, MB

No problem, what i listed is a typical 'high end' setup. You could also consider the core i5 750 or a Phenom 2 955 if you wanted to spend less but still game hard.

clock speed is faster on 650, but I have no clue what core/threads do and if they are needed for gaming 😉

It really doesn't matter. In my opinion, in the mid/high end Intel has the lead at the moment, so that would be my choice. You really can't go wrong with a i7 920 and X58 motherboard combination if gaming/upgrade-ability are what you're looking for, however x58 only really shines when overclocked and paired with multiple graphics cards.

The i5 750 is better by quite a margin. The 650 is not worth its price. I recently built a friend a gaming PC around the i5 750, and it overclocked to 3.8Ghz easily, and gamed like a dream. The i5 750 is a great gaming chip.

Bear in mind that if you go for an i5, or an i7 8xx series chip you'll need a different motherboard. Socket 1156 (p55) to be exact. These take dual channel DDR3 rather than triple channel. A good board is the Asus P7P55D Pro/evo/deluxe.

Make sure to get dual channel DDR3 (1600Mhz is fine). You'd also benefit greatly from overclocking the i5, 2.66Ghz is fast, but at 3.4Ghz+ it'll really fly. Get yourself a good 3rd party cooler and its a 20 min job - read an overclocking guide, download Realtemp, CPUZ and Prime 95. You'll be running faster than an £800 i7 975 in no time.

If overclocked, you'll be good for the next few years assuming you play at 1600x1050 and want high settings.

You'll be happy with either option. The more you understand the more you realise how many different options there are and its gets very difficult to make a decision. The 275 is a good card, i was just listing the ideal situation

I'm over in England so prices are different, but my friends gaming pc was:

Core i5 750 (overclocked to 3.8Ghz)
Asus P7P55D
4Gb patriot viper 1600Mhz ram
ATI 5870
Titan fenrir cooler
Corsair HX 750W

This came to about £1100 (about $1600) including stuff like a case/optical drive/win 7. Will max anything out at the moment, including crysis, at 1600x1050, and most games at 1900x1200. If you buy a DX11 card you'll need either win 7 or vista to be able to use DX11 technology.

Hope I haven't raised more questions than I've answered!

Cool, thanks for your help. I never overclocked anything before. So going to be very careful 😉 Where can I get good overclocking guide? I have no idea what is Realtemp, CPUZ and Prime 95 haha. Do I have to use them all to overclock CPU? Which video cards you think better ATI or Nvidia?

You'll be able to find a guide on here, just search for 'i5 750 overclock' and you're bound to find something. It can seem a bit daunting at first, but its easy i promise.

The programs are just used to monitor temps and stability check. Useful when overclocking.

Graphics cards - no preference. ATI have the best range out at the moment, but nvidia plan to release their new series soon, which could shake things up a lot.
