MSI-7641 Mobo: Orange Isolated light/flame smelt burning turned off comp is mobo dead? 6 month old mobo..

Hi all,

I bought some new coolermaster 120mm fans and I was placing them into my 6 month old build. I got all the parts installed correctly and turned on the computer then saw no post and thought hmm thats weird. So i restarted the computer maybe it was a glitch and tried again then noticed a bright orange isolated light and smoke/burning smell. I immediatly turned off the computer and inspected for any burn marks or anything. I didnt notice any burn marks or caps that looked bulged. I also took the whole mobo out of the case and looked at the back as well. Nothing out of the ordinary. So what I've done is completely taken apart the computer and reseated everything but the computer just runs with no post now. Previous to the day I installed the coolermaster fans my computer had been working fine daily.

Its weird for this 6 month old mobo to randomly die out on me and especially this extreme way I've never expereinced this before. This is what I've tried:

Tried:
Clearing CMOS
Booting with no RAM (I get ram beep codes 3 long beeps)
Booting with just 1 ram stick (no beeps) / I think mobo was onboard video
Booting with just video card and ram (no beeps no post)
Reseated CPU applied new thermal paste
Tried a backup PSU 450 watts and computer turned on for 2 seconds then immediatly turned off(doesnt do that with my cx600 which is weird it just doesnt post on that one).


Specs:
MSI 7641 rev 3.0 mobo
AMD FX 6100
Stock Cooler
8GB patriot viper ram
GTX 460
Ultra Blaster V2 case
Corsair 600CX PSU


I feel i've pretty much tried everything except for breadboarding outside of the case. This computer has been working fine for the most part since I bought it. I'm not exactly happy with this MOBO as i does seem to have a defective atx clip because no matter how hard I push it never 100% clips into the mobo 24pin atx connector its about 1cm off. I've also had random crashes and BSOD from it that I could never pin down they would come and go but the bsod code was hardware related just doesnt say which part.

I ordered a new mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128565 and it should be here between monday and wednesday. Its a different brand but Ive had a previous gigabyte mobo last me 7 years so I much rather go with them since this msi board I got with a tigerdirect bundle but it was still new.

Not sure if I should bother breadboarding or just wait until the new mobo arrives i dont want to cause further damage but I feel the other parts are still alright PSU seems to work/ I hear HDD making sounds/ CPU fan works/ dvd drive works/ and graphic card still spins.

What is your guys recommendation.

Did you bump the cooler? What fans were you putting on?

Did you unplug everything when you were installing the fans?

Did you get any fan leads caught in the cooler fan?

Use your nose. Is the smell still there? When you had the pc apart, what bits were the smell coming from?

It sounds like you were fitting the fans while the power was still on and you pushed something against something else.

I gather you suspect the motherboard is damaged and that's why you're swapping it out. I'd guess and say you're right.

The motherboard is seated on 6 standoffs its a mini atx mobo. The PSU is mounted at the bottom so nothing could have gotten in it. I have a fan filter covering the exhaust 120mm fan so nothing could have hit that. My mobo only has 1 SYS fan which I plugged my exhaust fan into but it didnt get power for some reason so I used one of my molex connectors which has a converted to turn it into a 4 fan 3pin outlet.

Did you bump the cooler? What fans were you putting on? - I was putting on coolermaster 120mm fans pack of 4 with 2 dust filters, the filters were going rear exhaust and front intake. I used a molex connector adaptor that turns it into 4 outlets for 3pin fans. Never hit the fans as it had the filter on it before I started them.

Use your nose. Is the smell still there? When you had the pc apart, what bits were the smell coming from? No smells or visible burn marks but heres a picture of the area if I remember correctly that I saw the orange flame light it was pretty fast but it seemed to be around this area if i remember. It sounds like you were fitting the fans while the power was still on and you pushed something against something else. - I disconnected all my connections and worked on a wooden floor while putting in the case fans then put back on table and connected PSU/display/usb ports/ ethernet etc.

I just want it to work really kind of disappointing to have this board die out after 6 months and the RMA process can take up to a month it seems at max with MSI. New board should be here wednesday at latest so i'll update when i switch them out to see how it goes.

since the mobo is detecting missing components.

few things you might have not tried.

using a different pci-e slot for the GPU.
removing the cmos battery, then powering up the system.
using the onboard display port
brushing the entire motherboard with a soft bristle toothbrush ("specially the pci-e sockets")

I've tried removing the CMOS battery for 5 minutes then powering it up. I only have 1 pci-e port but this mobo does apparently have onboard and i've tried just booting with RAM/ CPU/HSF and just got silence everything spinning fans working etc but no beeps or post. Only beeps I got was when no ram installed.

Does removing the CMOS battery and trying to boot the mobo without it do anything special I havent tried this yet

no harm in trying...

actually its like a cmos reset, ("removing the battery while the power is not plugged in, then pressing the power button for 30 sec to drain the capacitors")

but the opposite, forcing the cmos capacitors to get power from the mobo.

Well after seeing the orange light/spark then a quick little smoke I just dont want to cause further damage to CPU/RAM/GPU. I dont have a problem trying to troubleshoot some more but if i see that coming from the mobo im guessing thats not normal and its pretty much dead lol. I just tried turning it on I get no lights on keyboard no HDD lights activity/ no ethernet port lights .

Case Fans/GPU Fans/ CPU fans/ DVD drive and HDD all spin

I disconnected everything and only ran the MOBO with 1 stick ram in it turned on and silence no beep codes no post but all fans spin. Turned it off then tried again and same thing but when I tried to turn it off the second time I noticed the green power light on my case was off as if the comp was off but everything inside was still going on pressing the button didnt do anything so I had to turn off via PSU switch. Waited a bit and tried again same issue as start so I think its the mobo most likely which sucks cause when I bought my new build 6 months ago my old comp died after 7 years from the mobo dying but it lasted a long time at least!

Got my new gigabyte motherboard today installed it and everything is working minus me having a few mistakes like DVI cable connected to mobo instead of GPU and having my 3 pin cpu connected to the wrong 3 pins on the mobo (it was 4 pins for cpu fan so i had it on the last 3 wouldnt power fan). Everything seems to be working great now and I didnt need to reinstall OS just updated drives.

Only weird thing is that my computer doesnt give me a post beep but everything works fine.
