Hi guys,

Just finished a new build where I took a trip to Microcenter 2 hours away. Everything went great but am having some issues with my msi 7950 oc'd edition.

Idle temps seem fine but even running a performance test in windows makes my temps go into the 90's.

Running dayz I was getting close to 100 before I turned it off. And the fans sound like a damn jet taking off.

This can't be normal for these cards can it? Should I rma or just ditch this brand completely?

Seems like a mounting issue. I would attempt to remove the cooler, give it a nice clean with some 70-99% alcohol, reapply some thermal paste (Mx-4 or Shin etsu if you have it), and put it back together. Should be pretty simple. The temps are obviously not normal.

Which MSI model is it? To answer your question, that sounds like something is not right. The fans are desperately trying to cool that card down, yet are unable. I'd say RMA it at the very least. Too bad you had to make the long drive just to pick it up, because it may be faster to just exchange it in the store or get a different brand. Can you ship it back to Microcenter or do you have to return it in-store?

I was thinking a thermal paste or mounting problem too, but if the cooler is removed to reapply paste, the warranty could be void and no RMA or exchange would be allowed. 🙁

Take it, or send it back is the best option. Whether or not to get a new or different card is up for debate.

Its pretty hard to screw up a card so badly that they can tell if you removed the cooler. Basically, as long as nothing is dented or scratched up badly, there is no way to tell you did it..

AMD cards only have 4 screws anyways, if you remove the cooler, before you do it try and tighten the screws a tiny bit (something like a quarter rotation), as the screws might be too loose.

Its the MSI twin frozr III 7950 oc'd edition.

The idle temps seem fairly normal around 40-45 but it takes about 3 minutes in dayz to get around 95 degrees. It starts to level off around then but man its so loud its unbearable.

Not sure if I can send it back to MC or not. Might just back another trip and get rid of this thing and order the next one from amazon or the egg.

When running MSI Kombuster test I get to 88 degrees and 100% fan in around 2 minutes.

Does anyone else have this card? What do your temps look like?

Well guess I'm making the trip back sometime this week. Think I will just return it hopefully instead of exchange and just spend the extra 20 bucks buying something local at frys in case this happens again.

Thanks guys
