MSI 970A-G46 WARNING!

For any of you thinking about using or even recommending the MSI 970A-G46 motherboard for use with the AMD FX 8350, be careful. I just recently emailed MSI, and they sent me a very intriguing response. Here's screenshots of the email:

Can the same be said for the FX8320 then or is it ok to use with this board , the reason I ask is I just put this board cpu combo together week and a half ago. It ran fine for 3 days and has been bluescreening like crazy since then.

I would say yes. It is practically the same thing as the FX 8350. The only difference between them is the clock speeds. The 8350 runs at 4 GHz, whereas the 8320 runs at 3.5 GHz. I'm not exactly certain though. There could be other things that are causing problems. Try posting a thread somewhere here on Tom's. I'm sure there is someone more intelligent than I am on here that could help you figure out what's wrong.

I have a thread here for a similiar concern with the MSI 970A-G43 board, it freezes when under load
If a fan is placed on the VRM's on my board, the system doesn't crash/freeze, but if it doesn't have a fan, then when the PC is under load, the whole system just shuts off and you have to turn it off on the PSU and then back on

Get some copper vrm heatsinks and keep a fan on them. I am dealing with cooling the vrms on a g46 version of the board you have. Mine already has a heatsink on the vrms and with a fan on it, it stays relatively cool under P95 load now. Im no an 8350, 4.4ghz @ 1.41v with no freezing or crashing at all.

It already came with a heatsink, oddly enough, but that's clearly not enough, because just using Skype/internet, causes it to crash.

Antec Spot Cool. Its got an adjustable arm, so you can place it where you need to easily.

I used to use an fx 8150 + this board overclocked past 4.8ghz it had much more of a power draw than my 8350 running @ 4.4ghz.
Piledrivers are far more efficient in every way perhaps MSI just want you to get a new board.

No, the FX 6300 will do just fine with this board. Just be cautious with overclocking. You could overheat certain parts of the board.

And how long did you run it like this for? What were the temps on your motherboard? Yes, it can be done, but it's not recommended. You can potentially destroy your board.

I have an ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0 with my FX-8320 running at stock (3.5Ghz). Now, this motherboard doesn't have vrm heatsink so does this mean I can't overclock my cpu at all? I know this is a 4+2 power phase motherboard but I've seen people with an ASRock 970 Extreme3 (same as Pro3, just has vrm heatsink) running this cpu at 4Ghz no problem.

I don't need to overclock, I'm fine at stock but I want to get as much performance as I can while gaming.

I have the same problem seems to be only while gaming for 45 min or so the board just shuts off and I have to kill the power altogether to make anything happen have you found a good solution yet

I ended up buying my brother a new, higher spec power supply and it's not had any issues since.

Yes, perfectly fine. Just don't try overclocking to the moon with this board.
