I am currently running a MSI 970AG43 (I've heard they are bad for overclocking) with a AMD FX-6300 with a Corsair H80i liquid cooler. I Don't really have many problems with it I either seem to have a awesome chip or a good board I currently have it running at 4.8Ghz with turbo disabled and HPC mode enabled at 1.4125 Volts which from my understanding is insane giving such a low quality board and stable overclock. I know the board is of poor quality due to the fact it has no heatsinks on the VRMs and if I try and push my cpu a little bit more it trips into thermal mode and underclocks my cpu to 1.5ghz and 1.1 volts and stays that way till I reboot. I want to see if I can push my cpu to a higher degree of overclock I feel if I get a better quality board I could hit 5ghz stable at a low volt given I'm only at 1.4125 and have 1.5050 to work with from AMD documentation. This is where I require some more help. I am trying to decide between a ASUS sabretooth R2.0 or a ASUS crosshair formula-Z they are both close in price (20 dollar difference on amazon) I slowly upgrade my pc when I feel it needs to be I just upgraded to 64bit after using my Pentium Prescott 3.4E for years without problems. and with intels being so pricey nowadays compared to the price/proformace of AMD I jumped ship and switched. I normally upgrade a pc cpu every half a dozen years or so.Which one of the board would best suit my overclocking needs plus future upgradability to better cpu in the future? the Sabretooth or the Crosshair V formula Z?

thats a nice OC. and yes ur board is holding you back. plus I dont think ur current board will last long running 4.8ghz 😉
I have a asus sabertooth 990fx r2.0 and I realy like it. My 8320 runs at almost the same clocks and voltage as you do 4.8ghz 1.4125volt :)

But the real question you have to ask yourself is: Is it worth it? because lets face it. ur cpu isnt holding you back or anything and if it is and you realy whont more power. get a 8320 of go intel and get a i5 or i7. spending 120$ for a 4.8ghz -> 5ghz (4%) speedboost realy sucks 😉 a better way of spending that would be getting a heatsink for ur current mobo and buy a 8320.
But if you realy like overclocking and tuning ur cpu to get the most out of it! not just for the performance boost but just of the fun of overclocking itself I would get the Formula Z or the sabertooth

not just about getting the most out of this cpu, as I said I tend to upgrade slowly and I know a good motherboard is the base for a good long lasting pc with more upgradability, I wont be upgrading from the fx 6300 any time soon but I know the current motherboard I have isn't the greatest that's why I'm trying to figure out which motherboard I would get the most out of for the money for the next 6 - 7 years as I know the formula can hold the newer 9000 220 W cpus I don't know if the sabretooth can tho I normally will max out a motherboard before I begin to upgrade again (I just switched to 64bit and pcie 😛) oh and I have a heatsink I made for this one I popped off the one from my old TNT2 and used my dremel to cut it to the right sizes just been having trouble finding thermal tape/adhesive for it and the motherboard is going to be a gift from my friend just need to pick which one I want

well the new 9000 220watt cpu's are just heavy overclocked 8000 cpu's.. so dont waste ur money on them. and the am3+ socket is end of life. so no new cpu's will be comming. and almost all mobo's with a good vrm layout can run the 9000series 😉
I seriously advice you to not buy a new motherboard. It whont give you any gain or upgrade ability in the future.
by the time ur 6300 at 4.8ghz is not enough. the 8320 will be ancient and you will probly buy a am5 mobo with a 32core monster 😛
