Today I bought a second hand MSI 980ti 6GB as a starting point for slowly upgrading my pc. These are my current specs:

CPU: Intel i7 3820
CPU Cooling: Arctic Cooling Freezer i30 CPU Cooler
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-X79-UD3
RAM: 16GB (4x4GB) CORSAIR DDR3 1600 MEMORY
GPU: ZOTAC NVIDIA GTX 580 3GB
PSU: ANTEC 650W STRICTLY POWER PSU
Case: ANTEC NINE HUNDRED 2 V3 CASE

I want to get my computer ready for the HTC Vive. I did a SteamVR Performance test and the CPU came up with a green result. My 580 GPU failed terribly though. So I wanted to start with a new GPU and then slowly upgrade the rest of my PC. It was built in 2012 so it’s probably about time for that. My main 2 questions are:

1) Can I replace my GTX 580 and use the 980ti in my current build? I know there will be a bit of CPU bottlenecking, but otherwise would it be safe to use in this old machine?

2) If it isn’t fine to use, what would I need to upgrade for it to be compatible?

Thanks for any advice!

Thanks! I did come across that PSU when looking for new components, but I wasn't sure of the wattage I would need. I would like the option to get a second 980ti for SLI later, so would it be worthwhile investing in a 800 or 850W PSU instead, or would that be overkill since that probably won't be for another year or 2?

Thanks, I might go for the 850W then! Cheers
