Hello,

I'm having an issue with a new build not posting. It appears that the motherboard is getting power, but nothing is displaying on the monitor and no beep noises either.

On this mobo there is a Post 1 and Post 2 LED indicator and in there is the code "P5" (Post 1)(Post2). I checked the manual as well as online, and there are no codes for this that I could find.

Here's what I have done:

-On-Board video as well as two different GPU's
-Unplugged everything except 1 stick of ram and the CPU.
-Popped out the CMOS battery and placed it back in after a few minutes
-Visibly inspected the mobo and made sure the CPU was seated correctly.
-Unplugged all of the panel connectors
-Different monitor

Any help would be much obliged.

Update: Tried another PSU - and the same result. Everything appears to power on/light up, but nothing displays and the POST LED still shows "P5"

Solution
I feel stupid. I figured it out. The 860k doesnt have graphics support so I reflashed back up to V1.5 and now posts. Thanks for the idea about buying the other processor PLC!

d5 (I think?)

Amd x4 860k
Msi A88x-g45 Gaming
Power Color 7850
ADATA 2x4 gig 1600
Intel 530 240
OCZ 600W

All of these parts aside the mobo, cpu, and SSD were used before. I messaged MSI and they gave me the typical troubleshoot response and then said to RMA if that doesn't work.

I specifically asked what P5 meant, but got no response.

Also, i bought this mobo and cpu as a combo from Fry's. Maybe i should just exchange them?

Update: I guess the code could be d5 - with a lower case d.

I found a jumper off an old DVD Drive and tried that route, but to no avail.

I've tried everything I can think of and the only POST code to pop up is d5. That includes with no ram installed.

At this point, I'm going to box it back up and exchange it for another one at Fry's.

Got a replacement board from Fry's and it is the same error! Does this d5 error have something to do with the motherboard bios being an older version then my chipset? Please tell me the solution does not involve finding an older core that is not Kaveri.

I'm really at a loss right now. I just have the board sitting out on my desk with the 8 pin connector/24pin/cpu fan plugged in and it's registering the same "d5" post error.

Another update:

Since the ADATA ram I was using was not under the compatibility list I went out and bought some Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 and the same d5 boot error is popping up.

MSI support says that d5 is the board not detecting the memory module, but all of this ram works on my other MSI Intel board. (Z87-G41 PC Mate)

Well this sure turned into a soapbox. I am leaving this here for others to see and maybe help others who might run into this problem. It appears the problem is that the A88X-G45 Gaming board will not support the 860K until it is flashed with a more recent BIOS.

Now perhaps, there are versions of this board out there with the updated BIOS on it, but the two that I had gotten from Fry's are not compatible.

There is nothing I can do in my present situation, other than to buy an older AMD core that is compatible to flash it or take it to a shop and have them use a chip that is compatible to flash it. Either way, it's a huge PITA, and I hope anyone that is considering a socket FM2+ board are certain that it will work with the Havari cores.

Yes, I had purchased come Corsair 1600 Ram that was on the MSI compatibility list and it still registered me a "d5" error.

After that an MSI rep emailed me back wanting me to flash the bios with a file, but like I told him, the motherboard will not POST.

My only option is to RMA for them to flash it or find an older FM2/FM2+ chip to flash the bios. Given the circumstance, I am going to have to RMA.

I just want others to be aware that if they have an A88X MSI board that is built before August 2014 that your motherboard will not post with a Kaveri core.

I'm having the exact same issue with the same setup (bought mine at Fry's as well). I've tried just about everything. New RAM, hooked up a different HDD, even tried a new motherboard. Nothing seems to work. I called MSI support and one person told me the CPU won't work with the onboard video, and you have to use GPU. Hooked that up and still got the same error. Called back and another person told me I have a defective motherboard. I don't have another CPU to test out with it, I get the feeling this combo is just a complete dud. :/

It shouldn't be a dud if you are getting the "d5" error. If you look on the box at the serial # it will have the built date with in. For instance mine was "140401", so April 2014. MSI did not have an update out for this board until August 2014. It was in this BIOS update that the board would recognize a Kaveri core.

I share your pain. This is a huge PITA. I even went back and exchanged the board thinking that was the problem. You can imagine my disappointment when the same "d5" error showed up.

I actually bought an A4 5300 FM2 off EBAY today for $24.00. I am going to use that chip to flash the BIOS and then resell it. If you still have the board or are awaiting your RMA at that point I will respond here if it did the trick.

I just returned this bundle from frys too. I got this error code, and one other time I got error code 36.

My motherboard was from March 2014, which I'm assuming was also running bios v1.0. As someone else pointed out, 860k support didn't come till v1.2. Frys is known to sell bundles that "kinda" work. I returned mine.

I had the same problem with the Fry's msi bundle d5 error. Thanks for posting the info. Went to the tech desk 4 times they made me get a new power supply with 8 pin cpu power. Exchanged the board and the CPU same error. How do they not see all these bundles coming back and act like they don't know what is going on? TPITA! They wanted me to open a ticket for 80 some bucks. No way. I'm a swapper. They may be required to supply same or better board to keep purchase contract. I don't know.

Okay, I actually did the same and it DOES work. (A4 5300 FM2) It's a lot of work to get this thing working, but it's a solution. I just bought the old processor at Fry's and now I'm going to return it. Such a pain in the ass.

I am taking my back this friday as well. I told the service tech about the issue that this board needs an updated bios in order for it to work to try to get them to flash it. They wouldn't do it for free but would do for $30. I told him that you guys are selling a combo that does work together. It should work out of the box without anything else. He supposedly asked a manager and answered me no as well. I told him that I will return almost $500 worth of stuff on Friday. Such a shame as this was a great deal at $85 after rebate.

I've wasted a lot of time going back and forth switching components out. Since this worked, one more time won't matter since you were able to get it up and running. It was such a good deal!

So, I updated the bios to V1.5 and it still won't post. It does fine with the A4 5300 FM2 but won't post to bios with the X4 860k. I've cleared the CMOS even took the battery out to make sure it clears and kept it out. I've tried other bios as well from V1.2-1.5. I get 3 beeps when I start up twice. It is stuck on debug code 63 late cpu optimization. Anybody have any ideas?

Awesome, you can forget the simplest things when things don't work like you thought it would.
