MSI Geforce GTX970 detected but not displaying

I just got a new MSI Geforce GTX 970 video card. The 970 will not output any video whatsoever. Its fans are spinning, drivers are fully updated, windows is fully updated, and we know 100% the card works properly. I have a GA-Z97MX-Gaming 5 motherboard. The card has worked multiple times in the machine but refuses to display video once the machine is restarted. The only way we've discovered to get around this is to completely unplug the video card and boot the computer. It will boot using integrated graphics perfectly fine. If we plug in the graphics card again, it will display video but ONLY the first time it is booted. Restart the computer and it goes back to no output. Please help, we've spent 20+ hours trying to solve this

did you connect the videocard power cable from the psu into it?

Did you turn off integrated graphics in the BIOS? Also check for a BIOS update for your board.

Check cables from PSU to your GPU. Check if cable is broken. Re-install drivers (wipe out any previously installed drivers and install the new ones)
