I was recently given an old MSI laptop for school. It was a customized one as supplied by Power Note Books (which has since gone out of business). I was able to reach the tech support of the company that bought them, and they confirmed that it was indeed a customized GT60-0NE. They suggested the problem could have been driver related, but i've done everything in my power to fix it and still nothing. Also, I've installed Windows 10 on the laptop, but the problem happened before that too.
Here's the problem:
When I power on my laptop, the built in screen works fine, until some period of time has passed, anywhere from 10 seconds to 10 minutes, after which the screen shuts down, and nothing I do, from reboot, to shut down will fix it, except to take out the battery, switch it with another one (the same battery doesn't work), THEN turn it on. That fixes it 90% of the time, but only for the same amount of time. If I plug in an external monitor, however, it works 100% of the time, and does not go out. However, I really need the built in screen to work, as I already have a desktop and got this to use on the go.
It's also worth mentioning that the computer continues to operate while the screen is black. I've actually shut down the computer with the keyboard and memory of the keys needed to get to the power button in the start menu, so I know Windows continues to run.
Here's what I've tried:
-Updating the drivers
-Uninstalling all video drivers (even the Intel HD 4000 ones), rebooting, then letting windows auto install
-Updating them again from the last step
-Repeated all of the above steps in safe mode
-Went into windows apps and programs and removed all references to NVidia right after uninstalling all graphics drivers in safe mode
-Checking the cables (don't appear to be loose)
The only thing I haven't tried is flashing the BIOS, but that makes me nervous, as the guide for selecting the right BIOS tells me I need to find a very particular build, which is NOT among the downloadable BIOSes from the laptop's support page. I don't want to brick it, and so haven't taken a chance with the wrong BIOS.
The BIOS I have (given by MSI Helpdesk) is E16F3IMT.30M
If it were a desktop I'd simply start swapping parts until I had found the faulty one, but I haven't done much work with laptops before.
Does anybody know what the problem could be, or how to fix it? I'm pretty competent with computers, and have messed with the registry and BIOS settings before, am comfortable with CMD and Powershell, so if anyone wants to guide me through a more advanced or lengthy solution, I'm game.
Thank you.
