Hi,

I have dilemma. I was thinking about upgrading my MSI R9 290X since May '16. High price of 1080s was delaying the purchase. I dont like reference cards either so I was waiting for non reference cards. I was browsing scan website last week and saw MSI GXT 1080X with Free Gears of War 4. I thought why not and I impulsively purchased the card.

I have not opened the box yet as I am having second thoughts now. £650 is lots of money.

Should I send the card back wait for Vega or should I keep it? My main concern is value per £ and DX12 support.
I dont know the science behind this but I have heard that DX12 is increasing performance of AMD cards close to GTX 1080 for half the cost. I have checked benchmark of Deus Ex Mankind divided and R9 Fury X is as efficient as GTX 1080 under DX12. Does it not make GTX 1080 hugely overpriced and not as future proof as I would hope for?

I dont want to run GPU in SLI or CF. I need one single card.

I would like GTX 1080 to last till 2020. (FPS target > 90 fps at Ultra preset @ 1080p) and maybe >60 in 4th and 5th year if I go beyond 2020. I game on 144Mhz 1080p monitor but might upgrade to 1440p monitor. This will reduce the life of the GPU though.

Thank you for reading.

Vega isn't going to be out for months -- 3 months minimum, but more likely 6 months or more. While I'm a big fan of AMD, right now the GTX 1080 is the king of GPUs. Nothing can beat it for performance right now (not even Fury X with DirectX 12 or Vulkan support), which is why it costs so much.

That being said...

For 1080p gameplay, the GTX is going to be a lot of overkill. If you're worried about the cost, go for a GTX 1070: cheaper, less power usage, & matches/exceeds the GTX 980 in performance, plus it's a decent card for 1440p resolutions.

If you really are wanting to buy a Vega card when they come out, but really want a new GPU now, then I would suggest going for a budget/mainstream buy: RX 470/480 or GTX 1060...

RX 480 & GTX 1060 have close to the same performance, RX 470 is close to the 480's performance but significantly cheaper. For the RX 470 (or the 3GB version of the 1060), you can easily find one for under £200; for the 480 or 6GB 1060, they run from about £220 to £300.

Thank you for your help.

I have decided to keep GTX 1080. I am planning on buying 1440p Gsync monitor next year and I am fascinated by Nvidia Shield TV and would love to try to Stream games to the TV in the living room.

I must say that Gears of War 4 was an icing on the cake. What you wrote makes loads of sense.

I think that when Vega will come out I will wait for benchmarks of non reference cards and decide whether I should keep or get rid of GTX 1080. If I keep it I will replace it in 2020/21.

Thank you !
