MSI GTX 780 vs MSI GTX 970

I know that a lot of others have asked this question before, but I'm still stuck.
Can get a MSI GTX 780 Lightning (Hynix Mem) for 150$ or a TwinFrozr 970 for 200$.

Want to know which card is more powerful when both overclocked for 1080p. Ive been researching and seems like 1300mhz isnt impossible with the Lightning on air.Power consumption is not a concern. Also Lightning comes with a EKWB Waterblock so I can always put it under water in the future.

They're both priced well but keep in mind a new $200 480 should out peform both which is coming out soon.

For USD 200? It is better to get RX 480, 1-2 months from now.
Or pick GTX970 or R9 390 on eBay after RX480 is available on the market.
I am seeing already a huge price fall on all our current GPUs the R9 3xx and GTX 9xx.

At $200, RX480 will annihilate both cards and use less power. Only 3-4% people use cards above and faster than GTX 970 that is still at about $300. Most people go for $200 and below cards.

RX480 is expected to be as fast as GTX 980 or at least between GTX 970 and GTX 980. And RX480 will consume less power while feature more latest technologies. I am waiting for this card for one of my systems.

We have no reliable information yet.
It's probably somewhere between a GTX970 and GTX980 performance.

There will also be 4GB and 8GB models, but the 4GB is most comparable to the GTX970 and that is $200MSRP (probably $220+).

The 900 series and earlier NVidia cards also have no asynchronous optimizations so will lose out compared to AMD's cards (or the GTX1000 series) for DX12 games that are PROPERLY optimized. Games like the latest Tomb Raider that slap a DX12 label and actually get worse performance don't count.

There will be a number of other optimizations for the newer cards. We don't have that info for the RX-480 though so I'll list the GTX1070/1080 info instead.

- HEVC
- HDR
- audio optimizations (not sure if you need audio output from GPU)
- Ansel (2D/3D snapshots)
- higher video bandwidth (for monitors with higher res/refresh/HDR)

So hopefully Polaris has a similar VR capability. It should offer HDR, HEVC etc.

Of the two you listed OC for OC I'd give the edge to 970 over 780, I had a 780 for a few weeks before I got my 780ti and there was a nice leap in performance.

970 sometimes edges the 780ti (mainly at reference, OC'd 780ti is ~10% faster).

I also had 780, 780Ti, and 970. I sold them all. I also had a Core i7 2600k

I LOVE G-sync and plan to keep this monitor for a long time, including after the purchase of the next 1080ti. You can never have too many FPS and/or higher rendered DSR resolutions.

As for my next monitor, yes G-Sync is a must and most likely also HDR.

If you monitor is already fast e.g. 144Hz and your GPU can already deliver above 90 fps, with or without Gsync, you will not really notice it.
I have been using XB270HU since April 2015 and I do not really think GSync worth the extra cost.
