Hi
I just installed my new MSI GTX 970 OC gaming and I just noticed that the fans (both) starts and after 1 second shuts down again.

The card is doing that ALL THE TIME. Even at 35° idle temp.

I´m using afterburner and HWinfo to test and record this issue.

I don´t understand why.

Is this normal?

Ambient temps are high. 26°C.

And I also tryied and the fan goes up to 100% on manual and I can set it off again without problems.

The issue is the constant ON / OFF of the fans...

help me please

Solution
Just keep using the Msi until you hear back from them. If you have to RMA it so be it. If you don't want to wait get the zotac. Personally I'd wait for the Msi but that's just me.

Is your PSU good enough to run the card? Do you have all PSU connections to the card correctly plugged in?

There is a fan which can turn off based on temperature/load on the card. You must be hitting that temperature where it is programmed to turn on but when the fan moves it is cooler so it turns off.
Is the problem occurring when you run in a game, if so, you have a faulty gpu, you should rma it then.

I wouldnt RMA just yet. What PSU do you have?

That might be a feature of the new MSI Twin Frozr V cards. First, they spin in reverse at PC startup to clean out the debris and dust. Then, they are zero noise fans, meaning they don't spin at all at temperatures below 65c. When gaming, they'll kick in again when the temperature hits 65c+.

If they're constantly turning on and off, then that may be another issue.

I have a CM SILENT PRO 700W

Fx 8320 @ Asus M5A99X

everything seems normal and OK. But every 30 seconds fans (BOTH) starts 2 seconds and shutdown again.

what should I do?

I just used HEAVEN benchmark and MAX temp reached was 65° and fans @ 50%. SCORED 70 FPS on FX8320. Impressive over 48.2 of my previous gtx770.

after that the fans still switching on and off every 30seconds in idle.

AND ALSO MY FAN SPEED is 1% at minimum. I mean, the fans are OFF but afterburner shows 1% idle fan speed.

any tips?

the card seems to work PERFECT. CERO coil whining. CERO / nothing.

please help.

should I send this card back? should I run the fans 100% for hours to settle?

help me

Yes I can.

I fact I´m considering not to change the VGA.

but Its normal? what may be the problem?

because is not the regular problem of 1 fan @100%.

This is new.

Why should I get a faulty card? or is this fixable?

I think it may be faulty, but keep playing around with it to see if it can be explained. At first I was thinking you may be hovering around that 65c temperature mark with the fans turning on and then turning off as the GPU cools. So it does it when the PC is in idle on the desktop and not surfing the web?

It does it all the time when the vga is IDLE.

If the fans are on auto and I run a benchmark the fans act normal and start at 30% and up normal. Max temp on auto fan control was 65° running heaven bench.

After that when back on idle, again the same, 30 seconds OFF and 2 seconds ON.

don´t know what to do.

RMA no option here in Argentina. The guy that sell me the card offered me to return the money. But no stock anywhere here of MSI.

Are you using MSI Afterburner? If so, you can try to set a custom fan profile to tell the fans how they should behave. If you still get the problem with a custom fan profile, then you definitely have a faulty card. I wonder if the fan is properly plugged into the card's PCB.

with custom fam profile starting at 30° @ 30% and up the fans work fine.

I´ll try to test it for a few days and see.

And about the fan plug, you think that may be that the thing that is making this problem? mmm

thats normal lol. The fans dont come on with the msi cards unless a certain load or temp has been met. If that temp/load isnt being met except for small stints of time thats very possibly why the fans come on for a second or 2 then go off once the cool air has hit the heatsink. Call msi or email them and they will tell you the same thing. The cards seem to be working also as normal when you run a benchmark on them. The fans cool the card and work normal when a load is being put on them. Nothing here sounds out of the ordinary.

yes but I have low idle temp and NO CHARGE on the VGA and the fans start for 2 seconds.

I don´t think its normal.

I have to choose between refund or keeping it like this... here we are out of stock everywere so I´m thinking on keeping it.

Whats the contact to send an email to MSI ???

I didi what you told me.

I set a MANUAL fan curve to shutdown fans until 45° and even idle temps were about 30° the fans start for 2 seconds every 30 seconds.

So now I set a custon fan curve to leave them at 25% all the time and up with higher temps.

It´s a faulty card right?

should RMA change it?

I finally FIX the problem.

The answer came from MSI. After 5 messages they told me to try THEIR drivers from a link and it fixed the fans problem.

nvidia´s 344.48 drivers were making the bug.

I installed 344.16 from MSI and the card now works GREAT !!!

I´m really happy.

Thanks all for your support.

Hi,

The exact same thing happened to my Gigabyte G1 GTX 1070.

It happened after I had installed and uninstalled 'speedfan', the way I fixed it, was I uninstalled 'Gigabyte Xtreme Gaming Engine' so for you it would be 'MSI Afterburner' or for ASUS 'GPU Tweak' and then performed a clean install of my NVIDIA driver, then reinstalled 'Gigabyte Gaming Xtreme Engine' and now everything works sweet, fans stay off when under 60C.
