I'm building a black and white rig right and love the look of the MSI gtx 970, because the red part of the shroud can be repainted. However, I want the LED on it to be blue. Is there any way to swap out the LED that comes with the card? If so how easy is it to do? Thanks in advance.

I've looked at both versions and they seem like great cards, but- 1: the Galax card is very expensive compared to other brands. 2: The gigabyte card is all one color and doesn't seem like it would be easy to get a black and white color scheme with. I'm pretty set on msi but just want to know if I can swap out LED to blue. I know it can be done with gigbytes, so why not MSI?

I don't think I seen someone opening a MSI GTX 970 and change the LED. So you are in the dark if you want to take that route.
Yes the HOF GTX 970 is expensive but you do pay for a white pcb and a beefy gpu cooler.

Well, I'm a 16 year old working minimum wage and getting 2 cards in sli. As much as I love the look of the galax, they're just too expensive. Maybe I'll take a shot in the dark and pick up the msi cards. Thanks for your input though.

same 😛
shouldnt be too hard tho, unless it's one of those smd LED's? My soldering iron is kinda to powerfull for such small soldering 🙁

Gna open mine up pretty soon to paint it aswell. i'll have a look at the LED and report my findings

Hi!
I know this is a really, really old topic. But I wanted to let you all know that I have done it. I had a GTX 960 100 ME with an ugly green color scheme. I believe it's the same with 960/970 models.

Here's the inside of it: http://imgur.com/a/f81E3

At first when I opened it up, I saw a see though MSI logo printed on a paper (sort of). Peeling that off, gave me a small piece of glass with an SMD LED soldered INSIDE the glass. Soldering another LED into the glass is extremely difficult. (Piece of Glass: http://imgur.com/a/cAoLw The silver part is where the LED is soldered. I tried painting the glass, but to no avail. Painting 1-2 coats doesn't work, you just get a dimmer green, 3 or more blocks the light)
So, here's what I did:
-I bought a 12 volt 3258 LED strip with 60 LEDs/M, so one segment (LED strips can be cut at certain distances i.e segments) would fit perfectly inside the cavity where the LED and the glass would go, previously.

-I cut the end of the GPU LED's wire to procure the 2 pin plug which would plug into the card (you don't have to, if you can find one of that size). Soldered that plug into a longer piece of wire and then the wire to the LED strip. Put the completed LED strip with wire into the cavity, and plugged it into the card.

-That's it. Assembled the card back and boom! It was working. MSI Gaming App/Geforce Experience LED Visualizer can control the animation and brightness as well, much to my wonder.
Tbh, I didn't think it'll work and was planning to connect the strip to a molex so that I can use my PSU's power instead of the card.. but! it worked!
