What is the diffrence between msi gtx 980 and the simple gtx 980.
which would be better

GTX 960 is the chipset which is developed by Nvidia. Means the technology is of Nvidia, Manufacturer is MSI. Manufacturer makes some difference like cooling system, effective memory clock, factory overclocked, etc.

the stock cooler looks sexy but runs hotter/noiser

MSI has the Best Overall GTX980 card IMO runs cool no fans until 60C also has the quietest fans by far (if we are talking twin frozer that is )
