I'm close to buying the new latest Maxwell GPU.
I did very much consider TITAN X SLI but honestly vs the 980TI SLI the frame rate in 1440p/4k were like 2-3 FPS less than TITAN X.
The aftermarket 980TIs have better cooling, custom pcb, clocked more (vs the reference 980TI), look cooler even thought I love my 980s.
It's not really the price but lower temps and better boost clocks and safer oc if I need...still don't get how more VRAM doesn't = more FPS! lol

My goal is 4K gaming and using a G-SYNC monitor to improve the experience. I know some people say 4K isn't there yet and I see their point but I currently have the PB287Q and love it and know 2 x 980TI's and a G-SYNC monitor can provide one of the best 4k experiences right now...at least for me. Some games run 4K@60fps for me, some not quite but having see many benchmarks and videos close to 60fps is possible with 980TI SLI, which is fine for me.

I was really leaning towards the MSI 980TI 6G for the past few weeks for it's reasonably quick stock clocks, cooling and performance when put against other 980TI's which are still awesome. I'm not considering reference this time.

But I've been also looking at the MSI 980TI Lightning. Really impressed with it's stock/boost clocks and temps and performance. It costs a little more that a 6G and not as much as a TITAN X.

Not really sure which to go for I do like the fact the Lightning comes with a higher clock speed out of the box ...I've always stayed away from overclocking my GPUs as they were reference.

I won't be OC'g to the point where I have to remove the Frozr cooler which seems to be just over 1400Mhz for the Lightning...

I read 1500Mhz-2100Mhz is possible with these type cards, looking at the reference which is 1000Mhz stock that is insane!
But I won't be going anywhere near that crazy s*it!

Anyway guys, any thoughts?

I'd go with the cooler running cards. If you really need to you can always splurge the extra dough saved from titans into a third 980ti.
If money really is no object, I would get the water cooled versions so you can keep even more heat down. Funny thing about heat is that the hotter the card gets, the more heat it produces, making it run even hotter. There is a limit there, but you get the point. If you keep the temps down around 60 instead of 70, you will have a much longer lasting solution. Not that you seem to care.
