I just got a MSI GTX 980, these are the problems i am having. Only one of the fans on my card is spinning, My computer shows my desktop background and also can stream movies with no problem. But when i boot up any game or 3D Mark after the loading screen my computer auto restarts (im guessing the card is overheating). anyone either having this problem or who knows how to fix it?

Hey guys, hey I'm the OP's older brother, I got that 980 for his 21st birthday and want to make sure it all works :)

here are his system specs

Intel core i7 920 Bloomfield
EVGA X58 SLI - 132-BL-E758
MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4GB
12GB Triple Channel DDR3 - Kingston PC3-10700
ZALMAN ZM1000-HP PSU

It sounds like a PSU issue to me too, do you have another one to try? Can you use MSI afterburners overlay to monitor the temps as you boot up a game, I don't believe a graphics card would reboot the whole PC if it got too hot, the driver should just crash and kick you out of the game, I may be wrong though. One fan spinning could be a loose fan plug on the card aswell.

Why would it be the PSU though, I was running two R7 265's in crossfire just fine

Alright your GPU is not faulty then. Usually the fans work with each other meaning one will spin but the other won't

well then why does the whole computer restart when I load up a game or 3dmark?

can you plz try another pci-e cable from psu to card?
if your psu is fully/semi modular can you use the slot 1 and slot 2 for the pci-e cables?

if none of the aboves mentioned suggestions fix ur prob plz make sure all ur previous amd drivers are uninstalled.
make sure there is no prog running that you used to config anything on ur old r9 265's.
If you used any prog and its not running try to uninstall it since it might cahnged settings permamentally.
Last to come in mind is go on control panel/power options and click on high perfomance (it will be in balanced by default/yes this setting exist on desktops too)

Does he have a good airflow with the GPU?
