MSI GTX760 4GB vs. MSI GTX770 GE vs. MSI GTX770 LE?

Hi guys,

I currently have an MSI GTX660 Twin Frozr III, however I am looking to upgrade shortly and need help choosing which card to go for. I admit, I am a little MSI fanboy so I'm not considering any other choices from other manufacturers. I have currently found 3 cards around the same price point that I'm unsure about and need the community's help with. These are:

MSI GTX760 4GB OC GE (Gaming Edition) @ £259.99

MSI GTX770 2GB GE (Gaming Edition) @ £269.99

MSI GTX770 2GB LE (Lightning Edition) @ £281.99

Now, all 3 cards are based on the GK104 and they are all 256-bit cards too. The 2 770 cards have higher clock speeds than the 760 at default however, the 760 can boost the core clock up to 1150MHz which is the same as the 770LE. The 760 also has 2 extra GB's of VRAM over both 770 cards too.

The question is, is it worth spending the extra £20 to get the 770 Lightning or will the 760 be just as good without spending the extra money?

Thank you for your swift reply, however I don't like getting the reference cards. For one, these are MSI's Twin Frozr versions which run quieter and cooler than the reference cards and not only that, but they offer better performance too.

Just my personal opinion, but most reference cards have cheap tacky plastic shells, whereas MSI's Twin Frozr design utilises aluminium giving it a premium feel and a sense of quality and care. Further, being a metal means it will passively cool better than plastic too. Those are the reasons why I'm sticking with MSI here.

Nope, looks like that 770 is deffo the better deal to me.

Thanks for you input, it's appreciated. But can you please explain why the 770 is the better deal here? The 770 is still using the same keplar architecture as the 760 (GK104) and from the specs, they are pretty much all identical apart from clock speeds and VRAM. What makes the 770 that much more dominant than the 760 to spend an extra £20 on it?

sorry for my late reply but i mean the gaming edition with normal. i think this is a better pick because it has tons of more performance for 10$ more

2 extra SMXs. More ROPs, more cores, more SMXs, etc. These are basically processing units that give the card more power.

Ahh okay, many thanks for the information, these are things I didn't even know about. Sorry if I came across as arrogant, I just wanted to know what technically makes up the £20 difference. Thank you for explaining and helping out, I'm hoping to upgrade during the beginning weeks of Jan so hopefully the prices will still stand and I'll be able to get the 770 LE.

Oh and just an FYI to anyone reading the thread, the 770LE is priced at £275 on scan.co.uk rather than the £281 price at overclockers.co.uk. Only £5 price difference, but every little helps
