I just built a new system - ASRock Z97 killer Mobo, i5-4690K cpu, G.Skill ripjaws x 8MB ram, MSI GTX 970 - 4GB graphics card

Everything is working well except that the MSI GTX 970 graphic card is not being detected. I tried both PCIe slots, The 6+2 power cable is inserted. protective plastic on the PCIe connecter removed.

When the PC boots the light on the graphics card comes on. The fans don't rotate. The graphics card is not detected. I tried plugging in the hdmi cable in the graphic card instead of the mother board hdmi while booting. The display does not work.

I move the hdmi cable to the slot on motherboard and i see display. I tried installing latest NVIDIA drivers and while installing i get a message" Compatible hardware not detected".

Any suggestions on whats going wrong here? Do i need to change anything in BIOS to tell the system to use the GFX card instead on the onboard graphics

Thanks in advnace

The fans dont rotate... main sign of low power. What power supply do you have and how many watts?

Hmm thats really weird. It could be many things from your powersupply not doing its job, to the GPU coming DOA. I had an issue on my first computer I built was that everything worked, fans spun, gpu fans spun, but no display. I did so many things, and finally I decided to get a new PSU (same wattage) and it worked fine.

I see two power slots on the card. One has 8 holes and the other has 6 holes
I have plugged in the 6+2 pin power supply configuration in the 8 hole slot.

Are you suggesting I put one more 6 pin power supply in the other 6 hole slot?

Why wouldnt you not have plugged in the first place haha 😛 Do that for sure. Its like trying to jumper cable a car with only one of the wires attached to the car battery.

@Tacticall993, I guess thats the kind of dumb things first time builders do 🙂) . Plugged in both 8 pin and 6 pin. The fans are now running and the display working !! Thanks a ton guys, you are awesome. Thanks to Tomshardware too ! This successfully completes my first build. I could not have possibly done it with out you !

Haha thank @bignastyid I would have never asked that question because who doesnt plug everything in hahaha xD. Enjoy your new GPU
