i saw on newegg they listed this motherboard as "IVB CPU Ready". does that mean i can use IVB cpus straight out the box or if i have a SB CPU i can update bios to use IVB?

You need to have a SB cpu to update the bios in order to use the ivybridge cpu, it supports any ivybridge cpu, but you must update the bios, you might find that motherboard shipped with the latest bios, but to be sure, if you don't have a sb cpu, i'd get a B75 motherboard, which supports any ivybridge cpu out of the box, without bios update, and usually it's not much more expensive than a h61, and it has a bit more features.
