I am currently experiencing audio problems with my computer. When I plug in my headphones, the computer does not detect them and I receive the "No speakers or headphones plugged in" message. The headphones are also not listed in my playback devices. When I check device manager I have no warnings for my sound devices. I have tried updating and reinstalling the msi audio drivers. I have also tried the default windows drivers as well as the generic realtek audio drivers. I have tried every setting in the realtek hd audio manager and the best I can get is to have the pc output audio to speakers that aren't plugged in (hd audio second output). I have also tried giving audiopointbuilder and audioserv more permissions. If I use a usb dac, i get sound but it is muffled and there is also a lot of pc noise over it. I even tried using a Lubuntu live disk to check if it was the OS but I had the same problems, including the same usb problem. I am debating simply getting a new motherboard if that is the problem, but then I should be getting usb audio. I have also tested the usb dac on another computer so I know it works. Microphone input also doesn't work. And I have tried both the motherboard audio jack as well as the case audio jack. I have even tried unplugging the case audio header. I did a complete OS reinstall but that didn't work either. Any help is appreciated.

CPU: Intel Pentium G3258 4.3ghz
Motherboard: MSI H81-P33
Audio: Realtek ALC 887
Case: Antec VSK-4000E
OS: Windows 10 pro (All updates installed)

If you go over a couple of the threads here on Tom's with Windows 10 systems you'll learn that alot of the issues with audio are crackling/popping noises and they all stemmed from improper drivers. Previous versions of Windows would render an audio device dead until the proper driver came along but in this instance of Windows it's just as you've explained - muffled.

I would say, if you're going to stick to Windows 10 then be patient since its yet in its infancy. Some drivers will be seeing a revision(s) and Microsoft is actually picking up on community feedback but you have to voice your opinion on their forum/site. I'm yet on Windows 7 since it isn't broken for me 😛

So the best I could do is to try it with a windows 7 virtual machine. I still have the same problem. It is a fresh install of windows 10, and I unfortunately did not find that article of any help. The only thing that makes me wonder if it is a motherboard or an OS issue is that the usb dac does not function properly either.

I have tested both the dac as well as various headphones on both the computer and my laptop. They all work perfectly fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop. At this point I'm fairly certain it is my motherboard, but I don't understand why my usb dac isn't functioning properly. I know that the usb ports still work. I guess it was just giving me a little hope that I wouldn't have to replace the motherboard.

USB dac's function primarily through receiving adequate power and this has been the selling point for pretty much every motherboard out there ranging above mid level systems/motherboards.

+ are your USB drivers installed with those that are of the available chipset drivers on MSI's download site?
as a side note try uninstalling and re-installing the audio drivers in compatibility mode.

Ah also, the virtual machine wouldn't be the same as running off a proper Windows 7 machine but the way things have been developing with Windows 10, you'd need to be patient with it since alot of things have surfaced since its release.

We would much appreciate it if your current hardware were working out of the box - spent good money on it , didn't you ? :)

I have all the MSI drivers installed and I just tried reinstalling the audio drivers in compatibility mode to no avail. And yeah, I did pay good money for working components, especially because this motherboard is "Windows 10 Ready" according to the website.

Ok, so this is interesting. I tried the usb dac on another windows 10 pro computer and encountered the same muffled audio overlaid with pc noise. And this is on a computer that when it had windows 8.1 pro the usb dac worked properly.

Now do you think that the lack of onboard audio is also an OS/driver issue, or should I still look into replacing it? And at this point I think I'm going to stick with windows 10. That said, I have previously used the usb dac on both windows 7 and 8 computers where it did work.

Yeah, I guess this thread can be closed. I would however just like to thank you for your time and effort during this problem of mine.

First off, no need to apologize when all you're doing is giving me more help. Secondly, I tried all those things and they didn't work for me.
