I had previously posted on what could be the cause for the temp to be so high for the athlon xp 2700. I have now replaced the aerocool 7+ with a vantec aeroflow VA4-C7040 which is supposed to be a very good cooler for the athlon. To my surprise, the temps are still averaging in the mid 50's idle and in the 60's while playing games.

Nothing has changed, only that the new vantec is more noisy. The thing I don't get is that it reports system temp at 37-39C even when I have the side panel off. I even touched the cpu heatsink and it's not hot, I would say it's a bit warm.

Anybody know if any problems with the MSI motherboard reporting false temps? The problem I have is that I set the alarm to go off at 60C and so it goes off frequently. I don't want to risk frying my cpu by disabling it. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

My next step would be liquid cooling but something tells me I would get the same temps.

If you know that the thing has good contact with the CPU, 40C is warm. 50C is like a very hot shower (most recent house water heaters are preset around that temp). 60C is around the temp of a hot cup of coffee (actually it's the ideal temp for storing coffee). 60C could burn you...eventually...if you were stupid enough to keep your finger on the heatsink for more than a few seconds.

I've got one of these MSI boards and it too reads a bit high high on the temps (58 under load). If your system is stable, I wouldn't worry about it. Just get Motherboard Monitor which allows you to put a compensation factor on any of your temp monitors... then you'll feel OK when you look at the number!

Does it crash? Run prime95 torture test for about 2 hours. If it doesn't fail, yor sensor is out of calibration. This should not supprise, as it has never been calibrated.

I did run the prime95 for 3 hours and it didn't crash, although the temp did go up to 65C.
I am getting lower readings now with the vantec, before it would be around 55C idle and not it's 52C so I guess maybe it is that the temp sensor is not working properly.

Thanks all for your help.
