So I am building out a computer with my cousin. He ordered the 6700k, MSI M5, GTX 980 TI, and AX 760 Psu.
Upon completing the build (I had built many computers - somewhere between 15/20 gaming machines), we go to plug it in. And nothing! Not even standby lights on the motherboard, assuming the M5 has them. Power button does nothing. I switched outlets to confirmed functional power outlets with no success. I expected it to be potentially a faulty PSU at first, so I unhooked all the components and set the board on a wooden table. I only kept the PSU (Yes, I had both the CPU power + 24p pin), CPU, and 1 stick of memory in slot 2. Still nothing...I swapped out the PSU with another one I had in a different build that was known to work - still nothing. I unplugged the PSU, took out the CMOS battery and let it sit for a bit for a clear. Plugged in everything and still no lights.
My thought is that the motherboard must have been DOA. I have ordered a lot of parts from newegg before, and never received any DOA electronics apart from a stick of memory. Do motherboards arrive DOA frequently? Is this an unreasonable assumption? Any other ideas to try?
Basically I am asking what would you guys do if you were in my situation? Should I try to get a return on the motherboard, what does that process look like for MSI from newegg?
Thanks!
