[SOLVED] MSI MB and Graphics Card Compatibility Question

Googling graphics card compatibility, I only get posts or articles related to PCI-E slots and card size within cases.

I recently upgraded my system to an i7-9700K with an MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC motherboard. Going to the motherboard support website, it says that the VGA supported cards are all MSI branded cards. Granted, it's an MSI board, so I would imagine they would promote their own product, so I'm really only paying attention to the GPU unit itself (RX 580, GTX 1660 Ti, etc.). I have been trying to run a Gigabyte branded Radeon RX 5600XT. According to the support site (https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/MPG-Z390-GAMING-EDGE-AC#support-vga ), my card is unsupported. Should I change to an RX580 or other card that is considered "supported?"

I am typing this using that card and the computer seems to run "fine." I say "fine" because every morning, my computer freezes at the logon screen and then restarts itself. I've gone through many troubleshooting steps, all culminating with reinstalling Windows. I've reseated everything, updated drivers, and tried to unplug/replug in everything. I'm not wondering if my GPU being unsupported is the reason why my PC freezes at the logon screen. What's even more puzzling to me is why it would freeze in the morning. The rest of the day, the PC runs perfectly fine and I can restart, shut down, turn on my PC all day long as long as it's not the first start up of the day.

It doesnt matter what brand a graphics card is, they will work with any motherboard.

Just make sure the card is in the PCIe3 X16 slot, usually the closest slot to the CPU, and that you have adequate power for the card from the PSU.


As far as any issues with freezing, was this a fresh install of Windows when you upgraded the system, specifically the motherboard?

It was. I'm actually on my 3rd fresh install of Windows with this build (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HCgkmg). It seems to have happened from the beginning, and I have a brand new CPU, MB, RAM, GPU, and PSU. So I'm at a loss as to why it would freeze at the logon screen. But, the frustrating thing is that I can't replicate it, so whatever changes I make, I have to wait until the following day to see if it worked.

Check to see if there is a BIOS update available for your mobo.

Also be sure to grab all the chipset and motherboard drivers from the mobos website and dont rely on Windows to get the.
