I’ve just purchased the MSI Z490 gaming plus motherboard and was wondering what ram speed it will take so I can buy new ram.

Your cpu (very impressive by the way) on paper supports up to 2933mhz, that's guaranteed by manufacturer. Anything above is a risk, it may or may not run. That being said both ur cpu and mb are very capable so I don't anticipate any problems. 3600mhz clock rate is a safe bet good all around speed, sticks like that are widely available and relatively cheap even with low CL. You of course can try getting smthing better if you insist but again it may or may not run. Plus for example sticks 4000mhz/4400mhz with cl 18 or 20 will give you same result or even be inferior in performance to sticks 3600mhz cl 14 or 16. So I'd either go for 3600mhz cl 14 or grab 4000mhz cl 14 or 16 but price of the latter might be painfull.
