I have an MSI P45 Platinum MOBO and it will not hold bios settings once the A/C cord is unplugged from it, the first thing I did was put a new button battery on the board, dunno what to do now, can someone guide me in the right direction ?

Are you sure you put the CMOS battery in the right way up? Positive side (+) should be face up.
Also, there's a chance the "new" battery may be flat if it's been on a shop shelf for several years, so try another new one from different shop. Test battery if possible with a mini-meter.

Thanks for the quick answer. I did check to see the the + side faced away from the MOBO, I removed it while system was running so as not to loose the setting yet again, tested the battery with multi meter and it's 3.03 volts, I put another one in that I have here (it tested 3.10 /volts). I would have never in a million years thought that such a small drop in power of a battery would cause that much havoc, *shakes head and sighs heavily* I was going nutz trying to figure out that problem and knew that the battery was new, I put it in a couple months ago *facepalm*. Thanks a ton, it was so simple of a fix and right before my eyes. SB.
