Hi,
i have an msi z97 pcmate atx mb in a gaming system built and running fine for several months. we added a pcie avermedia gamer hd capture card in the empty pcie (pci e3) slot. it is next to a saphire radeon r9 270 2bg dual-x card (if that matters). the radeon uses 2 back plane slots and covers the other pcie slot (pci_e1).

for some reason the capture sofware says that no card is present (the main driver/application recentral). so we thought it was not in the slot correctly. it appears to be installed firmly (we've played with it enough to be pretty sure that is in the slot correct). I cannot find it in the device manager either (windows 8 - and i'm not great with 8, but good with xp and 7).

the install instructions say: 1) install the card in the slot, 2) install the recentral software drivers. I also need to update the card firmware and the firmware installer doesnt' see the card either.

do I need to do something to get the system to see the pcie_3 slot? is there some conflict with the graphics card and the other pcie slots? I did look through the bios and nothing jumped out.

thanks for the help,
jeff

Solution

Yes it can be installed there.
thanks rolli59. no the card does not need power. just insert it into an open pcie slot. do you happen to know how to see pcie status in the device manager? what about in the bios?

i've learned that bios has a motherboard explorer. very cool. it shows all cards that are installed in slots. the pcie slot is shown as empty.

so it should work, but the card must be dead.

to follow-up, i tried a second avermedia gamer HD card in pcie slot 3 with the same result - the card is not detected. on my MB (msi z97-g43) here are the 4 pcie slots i have and their current status:

pcie 1: PCIe 3.0 x16, sapphire R9 270 dual-x 2 GB VGA installed, manual says it supports x16 speed
pcie 2: PCIe 2.0 x1, empty and covered by VGA fan
pcie 3: PCIe 2.0 x1, Gamer HD installed
pcie 4: PCIe 2.0 x4, empty and the manual says it supports x4 speed

the manual also says that the 2 pcie x1 slots cannot be used simultaneously, i.e. installing a card in one will make the other unavailable.

could the HD gamer card be installed in the empty PCIe 2.0 x16 slot?

Yes it can be installed there.

Solution
... and just to follow-up and complete this thread, installing the Gamer HD card in the PCIe slot 4 (which is x4, sorry for my typo above that I've corrected), worked perfectly. thanks for all the help and education.
