MSI R9 290 - warranty/rma - second hand card - 95 celsius

Hello everybody.

I bought MSI r9 290 gaming card from a man which bought it from amazon.co.uk. I bought this card a month ago. He bought it at the april 2014.

I've tested this card in 3dmark, battlefield4, archeage.

MSI Afterburner shows temperatures such as:

idle: 45 celsius
stress: 95 celsius

Card fans are on 100% (they sounds like F16 plane)
Once card reach 95 celsius my core mhz dropping down
My computer case is open. Towards case blowing typical house fan.

I am sure that is something wrong with this card.

I have asked amazon. They said to me that they can do warranty service through first buyer or
I can contact msi direclty. I have contacted MSI directly they told me that for first 12 months I have to do warranty throught seller.

How I can do that now? Any idea?

Looking forward for solutions.

Was the card used for coin mining? Sounds like it. Check the thermo paste. It could need replacement or has become unseated.

Is this a blower type reference card? If so, 95'c and very loud is normal for these. The reference coolers totally suck.

As I said that is r9 290 MSI non reference card. With two fans.
95 celsius and 100% fan speed + house fan towards computer isn't right.

That card was not used for mining.

First thing would be to clean off the old thermal paste and replace with new. Arctic MX-4 works well on GPUs.

Its very easy, Unscrew the stock heatsink from the card (some small screws on the back of the card) and remove (might need a bit of twisting motion to unstick the thermal paste).

Clean off the old paste from the heatsink and the GPU, using lint free cloth or coffee filter and some isopropyl alcohol. Apply new paste to the GPU, a pea sized amount in the middle, then put the heatsink back on (make sure you plug the fans back in), the heatsink will spread the thermal paste.

Can I use Noctua paste? I've got almost full one. I got it from my noctua NH14 set.

Not sure, but I doubt it.

Yes you can, the Noctua paste is very good stuff, some of the best.

I took top off and one liny of thermal pads was in wrong place. Plus I had one square thermal pad missing.
I put everything on right place + I put one extra on missing place.

Now my tempratures on 100% FAN and furmark are up to 80 celsius. I guess that could be better. But it is okay for now.

What is your tempratures in furmakr for msi r9 290 non reference on 100% fan with open case?

I did. I get rid of old paste and put new one. Right in the middle of graphic card. Core.

Now it is below 70 celsius on 100% fan and 100% stress

62-68roughly
