MSI Radeon HD 6950 Overheating while Idle

My gpu(http://www.overclock.net/products/msi-radeon-hd-6950-2-gb-gddr5-2dvi-hdmi-2xmini-displayport-pci-express-video-card-r6950-twin-frozr-iii-pe-oc)

is overheating while on idle. I noticed the fan started to blast up for no reason as soon as my desktop loads. I got speedfan running and saw the idle temp is 75 C. I am guessing the fan sensor is working because I am able to hear the fan... is there a way I can fix the gpu from over heating? I already tried cleaning my pc and gfx with compressed air multiple times.

Ah, the fan is loud, that could be suggesting a faulty bearing. However, I still encourage you to put the GPU under load and report what the temps are.

Modern GPU's (including your model) are designed to run hotter and withstand temps up to over 100c. If it idles at 75 and under load gets to 85c IMO you are good to go.

If it gets up to 95-100 you are borderline. If your fan gets louder and louder at this point it could be a faulty bearing in the fan, meaning you have to RMA the GPU. GL.

75c seems hot but is not problematic. What temp does it go to under load? What is the temp of the room you are in?

The fan is supposed to start up when the PC boots, and is set up to run automatically. What your seeing could be normal.

This is why I would recommend not doing this procedure. If you dont know what you are dont know what you are doing you could:

Ruin a possibly perfectly good GPU

Void the warranty in the process.

If the paste is bad, RMA the card. If the fan bearing is bad as I suggest...RMA the card.

I had this gfx for about a year and a half is it possible that the bearing or paste went bad? Also, is there a way I can get the standard idle temp of this gpu? 75c idle still seam high to me.... going to run it under load nowl.

Most MSI radeon cards have a 3 year warranty (My two 7850 twin frozr cards have a 3 year warranty). You should check on yours to make sure, though im confident yours is 3 year as well.

I am not so confident its a cooling paste issue. The cooling paste does not get moved around alot and its really really really really hard for it to go bad.

A fan is a mechanical part, its constant moving and spinning can easily cause a bearing to go bad.

RMA'ing a card is not "buying a new one," it is getting a hold of MSI tech support, and getting them to allow you to send in your card so you can get a new functional unit. RMA even if the paste is bad is the best way you can go. This is because if the paste is bad and you re-apply it and everything is good- then hey your card works again. However, if you do all that and something goes wrong and you break the card- you could have voided your perfectly good 3 year warranty.

some of what kj said is true, but you don't get a new card.

no way to truly tell if that's the problem or not. but if you don't try anything nobody is going to know.

if you don't feel good about acting on the suggestions an rma might be in your future. you should check the purchase date of the card and recheck the original warranty.

fixing it isn't a "magic" process.
