A 500 MHz Radeon HD 7970 is pretty unlikely. I would think that to be a spelling mistake and that it means 50 MHz less resulting in a 950 MHz card which would be far more sensible. That or it is referring to the effective clock rate of GDDR5 like beanboom6 said.

Well I'll be going with what independent benchmarks say. It is time for me to upgrade now. In fact I've been waiting for next generation hardware to launch seemingly for years now.

The clock is ticking... very slowly... haha [pun intended]

Change the name on the box, done. The existing product becomes new. Don't even have to change the card itself.

I love how everyone that is a fan of AMD was laughing at Nvidia for the 7series being a re-badge/ refresh. Now what AMD is doing with their R9 series is the same thing, the top tier is new and everything is a slightly tweaked version of the last series of cards.

I like both AMD and Nvidia, I buy what has the best price/performance / expected life time that i will use it.

No way the R9-290X is a titan killer, I'd say more so GTX780 equal. Damn it, and here i was hoping for price drops. The GTX780 and 290X will be the same price at $599.99 FFS....QQ

Wow, given the data provided, the R9-280X could end up being very close to the TITAN, surpassing it in many areas:
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=683&card2=679#

I realized the R9-280X is nothing but an improved HD7970 GHz Edition.
Set the Core Clock to 1265 and Memory Clock to 3470 and you get the right figures -- that seem to surpass TITAN in Memory Bandwidth, FLOP and Pixel Fill Rate. All that while it would get beaten in Texture Fill Rate. How much did they say it was gonna cost? $300 ?
It looks like a done deal to me.
Note the TITAN still has more Texture Units and Raster Operators & Shader Processors. Nevertheless, this R9-280X looks extremely interesting.

That is the thing, the default clocks are indicated to be 1180MHz for the core and 6.0GHz memory which is actually a 130MHz overclock of the 1050MHz boost clock of the GHz Edition 7970 and the memory is clocked the same on both.

I still use an HD5770 though, been using it for four years now and I can still play games (I mean my son.. ;)..) at considerable frame rates with enough resolution... until I am convinced I need to upgrade now, i will hold on to it for awhile... ;)
