Hello guys, i recently build myself a PC and sadly i don't have enough money to afford a good GPU right now. Then i found a guy selling an AMD R9 290X that he claims to be "faulty".

He said that never tried to repair it, and the problem is: The cooler spins, but there is no video on the screen.

So i thought that if what he said it's true, and he never tried to repair it, i may use the Oven trick i probably the GPU would back to life, and i would have a great GPU to use in my System.

What do you guys think, you guys think worth the risk? He is asking about $80 for that GPU.

It's dead and a bit risky . Trust me dude I was there at one point . I had an R9 290 and I can tell you you don't want one. They are loud , hot and use tons of power . I actually got Rid of mine for $210 and bought myself the R9 380X . Should see a 10 fps loss but......
What's your budget for a graphics card ? You could pick up a GTX 670 off of eBay for $100

Hi there,

This is also my kind of thinking !
The only problem is that if it's not done right you could end up in 5 months with the same issue.
I don't use the oven trick anymore (unless for small mobo's without any plastic, batteries ...)

I can advise you to try with :

1. dissassemble the whole thing (remove plastic and cooler till you have both sides of the GPU free !
on the bottom side stick a sensor for temperature.

2.On the top side use aluminium tape (diy-shops have this to tape insulation for the inside of roofs) to tape and insulate the other components from heat !
stick the side of the tape close to the GPU on the 4 sides. do not flatten all of it (leave the tape floating above the other components, until you have somekind of cup.

3. Heat the GPU SLOWLY ... 1 sec per degree celcius up to 197°C (do the math for Farenheit, Kelvin or other)
4. Keep the 197° for another minute.
5. keep heating but slowly let it cool down (approx. 1 sec per degree !)
All together 460 sec heating. (give or take)

as from 50°C let it cool down using room temp.

7.Reassemble the GPU again and try it in the PC !

8. Let us know if it worked !

Cheers, Louise...

PS: I wouldn't give 80$ for a broken GPU, tell him you give 40$ after you tried the repair !!!
