Hi

I read a lot of forum posts about this issue but none seem to help, so let me try posting my own thread with my own specs.

Basically I had a MSI R6850 graphics card and I decided to upgrade to a MSI radeon R9 390 but after removing my old card and inserting the new one, the display remains black(not sure if windows is even booting).

PC specs:
Intel core i7 3770K
8Gb DDR3 1866 RAM
MSI z77a-GD65 Motherboard
Thermaltake 700 Watt PSU

I read that I need to try updating the bios on the motherboard but using MSI live update 6, this did not help.
Before installing the new card, I made sure to uninstall all previous display drivers. And I made sure that I connected the graphics card correctly.

Here are some additional observations:
When the display cable is connected to the R9 390, there is just black screen.
When the display cable is connected to the integrated graphics but the R9 390 is still fully connected, there is still only black screen.
When the display cable is connected to the integrated graphics and the R9 390 is unplugged then display works.

Also there is nothing wrong with the port as when I put my old graphics card back (R6850), PC booted up just fine.

Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Solution
Well this is awkward

Turns out I found a solution to my problem minutes after posting it.

Apparently if you try to update you BIOS with MSI live update, it will not really update the BIOS.
When I used a flash update for the BIOS and tried the card again it worked. So I think the problem was with the BIOS being out dated but MSI live update will not help with this.
