Hello, I have a MSI Trident 3 12 gen i7 12700 With a RTX 3060 12gb. Wondering what my GPU UPGRADE options would be. The computer is SFF form factor. There is a graphics card size constraint. It would have to be a single fan card. Can't fit a dual fan card. Wattage of the RTX 3060 is 170watts. I did some google searching and came up with a 4070 or a 3070 but i don't know for sure if it would work. CANT find a 3070 16gb single fan card for sale. I can only find a 4070 or 4060.

The Trident seems to be a mystery to upgrade because it is still fairly new

Power supply is a power Brick 330 watts i believe.

Also Wondering if anyone knows a place that could/would do the upgrade for me.
Also Wondering if i could do a processor upgrade from i7 12700 to i9? I am fairly certain that the processor is Socketed and not embedded.

I just want to know what my options are. There has to be some options though limited.

Thanks

Hey there,

In terms of your CPU, it's very strong. It can push any high end GPU. If you can afford it, and the only options are the 4060/4070 with single fan option, then I'd go for the 4070. The 4060 is not worth the money, and won't bring a huge uplift to the GPU you already have.

Seems i can't take the wattage of a 4070 at 200watts I would have to go 4060 ti at 165 watts unless there are more options out there i haven't thought of or heard of yet

And we don't know what the +12V power available from this PSU is, nor what connectors it has. The challenge is far more than just getting the PC under 330 watts and calling it a day.

If you seriously want a GPU upgrade like this, then moving the motherboard -- or buying a new motherboard as well if it's a custom form factor motherboard -- to a more appropriate case with a a real PSU is the only route worth considering.

Your right, there is alot of unknowns about this unit. Hoping someone else who has taken this unit apart and knows it well will see this post and reply. Someone im sure will know what connectors it has and what +12 volt rail power will be. But sorry i don't know that information

I really wouldn't want to move the parts into another case though. I would much rather keep the system SFF. Thank you for the suggestion though

You are limited to what you have for two reasons:

- length of GPU card
- power supply

Because of these limits you cannot select GPUs that are a clear improvement over your existing 3060, leaving you stuck with GPUs that are almost no better.
Despite not being worth the money, there are three GPUs that you can upgrade to if you wish:

Gainward GeForce RTX™ 4060 Ti Pegasus OC 8GB
Palit GeForce RTX™ 4060 Ti StormX OC 8GB
ZOTAC GAMING GeForce RTX 4060 8GB SOLO

The Gainward and Palit are overclocked 4060 Ti models that are almost decent improvements, however they are not good value. For the money you could be looking at a much nicer upgrade, such as an 7800XT or a 4070 Super.

You must adress both problems if you want an upgrade.

Do the Gainward and Palit use more wattage or are they 160-165 watts
Are you familiar with this unit? Have you taken one apart? Do you know what the wattage is of the 12v rail? Or amperage of the 12v rail. The Power brick is 19.5v 16.92amps.
Wondering if you know of anyone that could upgrade the unit for me?
Wondering if there are any other choices? I have a large budget so i could do up to 1000$
Wondering if i should wait for the release of the 5000 series.
Do the 4000 series cards have 16gb or 8gb or is there a switch?
Thanks again for your reply

I'm not familiar with the PSU. As for the 4000 series, different models have different amounts of VRAM.

Since you have a sizeable budget, why don't you move your stuff into a roomier case? Because it is going to be a nightmare trying to find such a short card.

Here is Fractal Design's small form case, The Ridge: https://www.fractal-design.com/products/cases/ridge/ridge/white/
Supports GPUs up to 325mm in length, though you should also check height and thickness.

Throw in a SFX or SFX-L power supply, like a Seasonic SPX 750 or Thermaltake Toughpower SFX 750 TT, and your GPU choices open up considerably.

hello, I'm also an owner of the msi trident 3 12th gen, mine has a i5 12400f and a 3060. Your best option for a gpu would be a single card 4060ti, it's much stronger than the 3060. Most people say the 4060 ti is a bad value, but in our case it's the best card we can get in terms of overall power. It runs at 165 watts I believe. You can buy a palit 4060 ti from eBay for around $480 or from overclockers.uk for 316 euros plus another 60 euros for shipping, so $400ish dollars assuming you don't get hit with import fees.
Also, where is this single fan 4070 you speak of ? I can't find it, if it's the founders edition, then im pretty sure it won't fit in the trident 3.
