Question MSI X99A Gaming 7 compatibility with M.2 PCIe

My MSI X99A board has an M.2 slot and the manual says it's compatible with both M.2 SATA 6Gb/s or M.2 PCIe. But the board is 3 years old and i am wondering if the newer M.2 PCIe modules like Samsun 970 EVO M.2 2280 500GB PCIe Gen 3.X4 are compatible.
(Planning to do a clean install of Win 10 to the M.2)

Yes they are compatible, the std is fully backwards compatible.

MSI X99A is a partial model name.

X99A SLI PLUS
supports M.2 PCIe module up to 32Gb/s speed.
