Hi, I've just completed a build and am having trouble with the motherboard (I assume).

When I first started it up it seemed to power up fine but I was getting no video out. The fans were all spinning and the liquid CPU cooler started churning.

I powered down and checked all the connections with the graphics card... everything looked fine. When I plugged it back in and hit the power button, it seems to power up for about half a second then powers itself back down. Lights come on, fans jitter, then it just sputters out. The motherboard has a "clear cmos" button/light that turns on as soon as I tried powering it up and remains on when it powers back down. I can't find anything in the manual about what this light means so I figured it just wanted me to clear the CMOS. I unplugged it, hit the clear cmos button, hit the power button, removed the battery on the board, let it sit a minute or two, then put the battery back in, plugged it back in, and powered it back on... with the same result. I simply can't get the thing to turn on.

Does someone know what the problem might be? Again, the motherboard is the MSI x99a sli plus, the cpu is intel 8620k, graphics card is evga gtx 980 ti. Not a cheap build so I hope there isn't a bad part.

Let me know if more information is required. Thanks!

Try clearing all power from the machine. Unplug it and hold power button for ~20-30 sec. Plug it back in and try to boot again.

If you still have no signal try following the steps in this guide:

May be a mobo or psu issue. Another thing to keep in mind is that something could be shorting somewhere. You might want to rebuild your machine outside of the case on a desk to test it further.

Thanks for the reply. The problem must have been that the cpu wasn't seated properly in the socket on the motherboard because taking it out and putting it back in is what fixed it. I consider myself very lucky no pins got bent.

I had the same problem (mobo lights and fans came on, but no video output), and reseating the CPU finally solved it.

It didn't seem like anything was out of place, but until I took off my big NH-D15 cooler and popped my 5820k out and back in, I just couldn't get it to POST.
