The Rosehill Capstone 1000w 80 plus gold PSU came with a big power pin to go into the motherboard plus a 2 x 4 pin that plugs in near the CPU. I plugged the big PSU plug into the mother board but am having a problem with the 2 x 4 pin plug.

If I do NOT plug in the 2 x 4 pin plug and then power on, the cooling system runs and even the DVD player runs a bit. If I DO plug in the 2 x 4 pin then power on, the motherboard LED's just blink for a second and then it all shuts down - no fans run or anything

What could be causing this?

Also the i7 5820k CPU would only plug in upside down into the motherboard. Is this right?

MSI x99s SLI PLUS,
i7 5820k,
Corsair 2 x 8 GB 2133 DDR4
Corsair H80i Water Cooling
Rosehill 1000w 80 plus Gold PSU,
MSI GeForce 210 1GTB DDR3 (weak Graphics card, but shouldnt be a problem)
WD 2 TB HDD

You might not be getting all eight pins completely plugged in. The 8 pin is essential for power to the CPU and it won't run without it. What do you mean by "upside down". That definitely doesn't sound right. The CPU can only be installed one way. The motherboard is specifically keyed for the cpu to fit in a single manner, pins down towards the motherboard, and should EASILY drop into the socket when the lock bar is moved all the way up. If you've forced anything or installed the CPU any other way, it is probably done.
