Hello I'm helping my friend build a gaming PC.
The ram is not on the compatibility list of the motherboard. And the motherboard is not on the ram's compatibility list.
case: nzxt phantom - mid tower
mobo: MSI Z87-G45
cpu: i7-4770K
ram: G.SKILL F3-12800CL10D-16GBXL (2x8 16GB)
ssd: patriot blaze (borrowed because he doesn't own a drive yet)
psu: Corsair RM850
No dedicated graphics yet
I put the ram in slots 2 and 4. The PC does not display anything.
No POST no beeps.
The fans spin as well as an LED on the board.
If I put 1 stick of ram in slot 1. It boots fine.
(I don't know how stable the system is though we only sat at windows desktop)
Is there anyway to make this ram work? Any settings in the bios?
Anything I can try?
I turned on XMP. Tried OC'ing the ram to 1600mhz. (Though it probably stayed at 1333)
Any kind of "MemOK" equivalent to msi? ("MemOK" is Asus)
I've never worked with an MSI motherboard before. Just Asus.
From gskill: "Optimal Compatibility and Superior Quality" (Classic series of ram)
I don't understand how ram made for "Optimal Compatibility" wouldn't work in this mobo. As other ram sticks from the same series are compatible.
This motherboard seems to have something against dual channel memory. As 2xX rarely shows up in the compatibility page.
How can a gaming orientated motherboard not support 2x8? Or 2x anything.
Most people want to leave room for expansion so they'll buy 2x8. not 4x4 which is all this msi board accepts when it comes to 16GB. it's also more expensive...
This motherboard in total only supports 5 different ram kits in a dual channel config.
Just Five. That is appalling. 10 if you count the 5 on the OC memory page.
In my mind ram is ram. It should work. What's so different about corsairs 2x8 XMS3?
Which is the only 16GB 2x8 ram kit on the list.
Also the gtx 980 isn't on the motherboards compatibility list... That should still work right?
Any help is greatly appreciated and thank you very much for your time!
