So recently I bought an Asus AC68 network adapter but my motherboard (MSI Z97 Gaming-3) can't seem to pick it up. Have you/Know of anybody which have had the same issues as mine?
Could it be because the MSI Z97 is outdated?

In advance, thanks.

If it's not showing in device manager try a different PCI-E slot. Preferably an x1 slot.

As long as you have the networking card populated in the appropriate slot, there shouldn't be any reason why it won't work. Now have you made sure your motherboard BIOS is up to date? Have you made sure you've installed the drivers for your networking card to rule out it's inoperability? It'd help us two fold to learn the rest of your system's specs inclusive of your OS.

Please list them as:
CPU:
Motherbaord:
Ram:
SSD/HDD:
GPU:
PSU:
Chassis:
OS:
It'd help to include how the expansion slots are populated.

Clean the contact pins on the card with 90% isopropyl alcohol. Maybe even try updating the bios. Worst case scenario the card is dead. Which PCI-E slots have you tried?

I've tried both PCI E_3 and PCI E_1.
