Hey, I got the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard 2 days ago and have fixed up everything. My last problem is that I don't have the Ethernet Drivers nor know how to get them? So my motherboard doesn't detect my Ethernet nor WI-FI. I downloaded all the mobo's drivers from another computer and installed them onto mine but the Onboard Lan Driver (Ethernet driver) can't be installed because I don't have "Qualcomm Atheros hardware installed in order to install Qualcomm Atheros Killer Network Manager Suite" ? I'm kind of stuck and don't really know how to go about this. Can anyone help? Thank you

It's not that it's not detecting the cable, it doesn't detect the ethernet chip on the motherboard. If it did, then the driver would install. Just like the COM port that you aren't using was detected, so should the ethernet port. It wouldn't matter whether you had a cable plugged in or not. Each device on your motherboard is detected by the OS, and each one of those devices needs a driver. Windows hasn't detected the hardware as it hasn't installed a driver for it or listed is as an Unknown Device.

It would be the same as trying to install the nVidia driver, but the graphics card was not plugged in, or it was defective in some way. The driver would say that it couldn't find the hardware and end the install. This is the behaviour...
@techgeek It is, it's been enabled ever since I got my computer running with the new mobo

On page 8 it shows my link / act and speed LED's. For my Speed LED it is orange , but for my Link/Act LED It is off (no link). What should I do about this ? My Ethernet is connected to the router

Are you running Windows 8 or 8.1? 32 or 64 bit?

Did the ethernet adapter ever work?

Can you take a screenshot of your Device Manager and post a picture of it here?

There should be an exclamation mark indicating a device with no driver if the hardware is being detected. If not look under Network Adapters to see if it's there and whether there is a problem with it or not.

Well it looks like there is an unknown device listed under ports and since that motherboard doesn't have a printer or serial port, we can assume that's it.

Download from this link:

Driver Only

This is the driver only, not the utility. Unzip it on your desktop.

In the Device Manager, right-click that Unknown Device and select Update Driver Software and select Browse My Computer for Driver Software. Pick Let me pick for ...... then click the Have Disk button. Navigate to the folder on your desktop where you unzipped the drivers and install the driver.

Well it has to be that device with that motherboard. Can you verify you have the correct model of motherboard? Look at what's silkscreened on the motherboard itself, it should have the name of the board on it somewhere. If you could post an image of it here.

As for the drivers, the X64 folder is the one you want, the X86 folder is for a 32bit OS.

He's done that, the Drive and Utility and the Driver only. Both tell him he doesn't have the hardware. Just look at the posts above. I had him check the BIOS to make sure the device was enabled. He does have a Unknown Device in the Device Manager, but it's not accepting the driver for it.

Well that's the box, do you have one of your actual motherboard? I've never heard of the wrong motherboard being packed into a different box, but who knows. It just seems odd that the driver won't install. Unless that Unknown Device is another device you don't have a driver for.

Well I should have looked closer at the manual, there is an internal COM port that requires a card plate / cable to breakout of your system. So that COM port is in fact correct. If you don't need this, you can disable it in the BIOS.

However that doesn't fix your original problem. It's coming to the point when I think your motherboard is defective and may require RMA / exchange.

Ok well that's disappointing. At least from what I can tell that's the correct motherboard, but the graphics card is blocking the model name silkscreening. Either way with close examination it looks like the right board.

I noticed from your picture that you didn't put all the screws to hold the motherboard down. These are used to ground the motherboard to the chassis. For future reference, you might want to put all the screws in. DId you use all the correct standoffs? This is important.

One last thing before we write off the motherboard, have you tried to reset the CMOS?

@techgeeks I don't have anymore screws for the rest but I atleast have the standoffs and screws for all 4 corners.

No I didn't do a CMOS yet. Should that be considered even though it's brand new ?

I just troubleshooted my Ethernet icon and it error it gives me is that I don't have a properly installed network adapter. Should one have came with the motherboard?

The ethernet adapter is built into the motherboard. That you don't have an Unknown Device showing in the Device Manager indicates that the OS can't even see the hardware. Which means in all likelihood that the device (Atheros chip) is defective or the board is damaged (traces, solder or components). When assembling the computer did the screw driver slip and hit the board? Did you only put standoffs where there are screw holes on the motherboard? If there is a standoff in the wrong location it could be touching something on the back of the motherboard that it shouldn't be.

Resetting the BIOS via the jumper is a last resort. I don't think it's going to work, but it's worth a try.

It would be the same as trying to install the nVidia driver, but the graphics card was not plugged in, or it was defective in some way. The driver would say that it couldn't find the hardware and end the install. This is the behaviour you're having with your ethernet hardware / driver.
