I decided to upgrade my MOBO and CPU from my existing z77 setup.

I did a lot of research and settled on an MSI z97 Gaming 7 and the i5-4690K

Hooked it all up, post went fine booted right up with onboard graphics. Did a fresh windows install.

Went and added my 7870 and suddenly D6 debug error code. Try the card in the other PCI slots, works fine. Contacted MSI and they said bad primary PCI and I should RMA the board.

So I did an RMA (via Amazon) and got another board a day later. Just hooked it up (outside case) and have the exact same problem. No bent CPU pins or anything, that was my next thought.

I have a fair amount of build experience and double check all connections.

Any ideas? Or did I really just get 2 crap boards from the same batch?

It's not impossible that you got two dud boards in a row. Especially if, being from the same seller, they came off the production line at similar times. These issues do frequently occur in batches, and you may have just received two from the same batch.

Best just to try again, really. If the seller has any way of checking the manufacturing date, or the date they received the items, ask if they can specifically replace it with another board that was either manufactured or received on a very different date.

yeah with how fast MSI was willing to RMA after I mentioned the primary PCI not working it doesn't surprise me if it was a bad run and somewhat common. I assume they can tell the batch date from the S/N

yes they can also on both mb do they have the newest bios file?? sometime it can be a bios codeing issue if the mb have old bios on them. also check to see in the mb guild what irq and memory ramg if they show it the priamny video display slot uses. somretime it can be two devices using the same irq or memory range. also check for irq issue..say sata port 3 cant be used if you do this. I seen issues here where people connect a boot drive to 3 party sata and get issues at boot. also if your using a 3 party heat sink make sure the board has not defected down and shorted out or the cpu lid bent from cranking the cooler on. one last think check the gold pins on the card make sure none are broken or missing.

Thanks all for the input.

Everything I've checked on my end appears to be fine other than that slot not working on either board. The GPU works fine on the old board and setup still without a hitch.

Amazon requests that I send both boards back for a refund while they look into the rest of the stock they have. They're all from the same shipment.

I guess I'll have to go with something else or order elsewhere!

Yeah I still like MSI products, just not on board to try for a 3rd time. Looking into switching to an Asus board.

First time I've run into mobo trouble out of box.
