MSI Z97S SLI Krait Edition: PCI-E 3.0 only?

Just about to start getting parts for a friend's build I'll be doing, but I noticed that the PCI-E spec for this motherboard are 3.0 only. I was under the impression the slots are backwards compatible? Will a PCI-E 2.0 card work in this regardless?

I'm asking because he'll be using an older PCI-E 2.0 card until Arctic Islands/Pascal come out. CPU will be i5-4690k

Yes 2.0 will work in the slot.
