This questions seems hella .misc to me:

I know WotC keeps this kind of business stuff close to the vest, but is there
any data about how Alpha sold? I know they did a 2 million-card print run,
how long did it take to move all of that stock into the distributor or
retailer level? Were Alpha and Beta sold at the same time?

Alpha was a 2.6 million card print run, and was released into the market
in August 1993. It sold out within a month, IIRC. Beta was 7.8 million
cards and showed up around October 1993, and was sold out by December.
Unlimited was *40* million cards, was released in January 1994 and sold
out by March 1994.

Yes, you could say that the game was successful.
