So I'm playing Halo multiplayer and I'm running towards a rocket
launcher lying on the ground when a stream of bullets come from behind
me towards the launcher. I pick it up on the run and start taking
hits. I turn and it's someone on my own team. I keep going toward a
teleport door and he throws a sticky grenade at me. Luckily I see it
and hop over into the portal before it goes boom. He follows me thru
and starts shooting me again so I let him have a rocket which kills both
of us (actually Halo claimed I killed him and he killed me). While
waiting for rebirth he types at me that it was HIS rocket launcher. Was
I wrong to take the launcher? No matter what, he's wrong to shoot me
and throw grenades at me. Those things can hurt! I know shooting a
shot or two at a Hog to get the driver's attention is an acceptable way
to communicate but for claiming a weapon?

I've had some bring me down to 1 bar with their assault rifle because I
was in "their" spot while guarding the base. And after I took them out,
the asked why because they were only funnin'.

I'm surprised you resisted for so long, well done, I would have stuck a rocket up his ass as soon as I picked it up. Every game has it's a-holes I'm afraid, just ignore and move on :).

Thanks for the responses. I'm relatively new to online gaming and I
sometimes wonder if I'm missing some unwritten rules.

There is only one situation where Team Killing (abbreviated TK in online
chat, assume correct suffixes as needed, also can be used to refer to the
person) is ok, and that's when a teammate asks you to in order to get them
back to the base quickly to protect or recover the flag without taking a
suicide respawn penalty. That's it. And I've only seen that happen once.

A TK is a dirty trick done by a lower life form and is never correct
ettiquette in a regular game. They will get you kicked out of any clan and
banned from any server whose administrator knows what he's doing. Sometimes
permanently.

After an accidental TK the perpetrator should apologize publically (saying
"sry" is enough) and the victim should respond with "np" (no problem) or
some similar acknowledgement, and move on. Deviation from this is also bad
manners.

Latest versions of the dedicated server allow for automatic kicking or
banning of TK by a very flexible set of rules.

If you get TK by somebody and you know it's intentional, announce it
publically and the rest of the team may begin to go after him until he gets
fed up and leaves, or at least will know to avoid him. If it's bad enough,
switch teams.

Personally I just ignore these types, consider them hostile, but don't
attack them lest I hit a teammate. I just consider it an extra challenge to
get the most flags and most kills even though my own teammate is betraying
my team.

I always say "sorry" (or sry) when I accidentaly TK someone - those
Warthogs (or is it a Puma?) have the slippery-est tires I've ever seen
but I don't respond when someone TK's me and says "sorry". I'll start
doing it. It's usually pretty obvious when it's an accident and I'm
usually re-spawning in the middle of a tank battle at the time but
responding to a "sorry" makes sense. I do usually say something
publically when someone intentionlly TK's me (as opposed to
accidentally) since the game only says "someone was betrayed by
somebody" Thanks.

Most "TK'ers" are between the ages of 10 and 14 and have no common sense or
don't like following "the Rules".

As others have posted, the new server code allows for automatically
kick-banning users by IP address that consistantly TK. Unfortulately, some
of them make the TK limits *very* lose - say, 15 TKs before a ban.

Those players that will TK just to get into a Scorpion or to grab that lose
rocket launcher have poor attitudes and should be publicly out'ed and
shunned by their their team-mates ASAP - unfortunately, there are also those
players who get a good laugh when their teammates are TK'ed, and probably
cheer the TK'er on.

Another facet to this phenomenom are the traitors - those who will kill
themselves off, change sides when they re-connect and intentionally cause
trouble for their old teammates. This is absolutely *unconcionable* and
should be dealt with until the traitor gives up.

Personally, anyone who even *tries* to TK me will get more than they
bargained for <grin>.
