I collect old PC games and to be able to play some of those games I need old PCs. I've recently built a slot 1 and a socket 737 PC and that all went fine. Earlier this week I thought it would be fun to build a q6600 pc because I owned most of the parts.
The first PC I biult:
MSI P6N SLI V2
Pentium 4 3.2GHz 1MB
Corsair CX 600M
Corsair DDR2 Value RAM
Asus ROG 8600GT
I built the PC and pressed the power button; the leds flashed once and I heard an electrical zap/crack and smelled blue smoke. Turns out the mobo fried both the pentium 4 and the 8600gt I was quite disappointing because the mobo was very high end but luckily I fried the p4 and not the q6600.
Today I decided to give it another crack but with different parts:
asus p5kpl-vm
Core 2 Quad Q6600
Combatpower 750w supply (kinda junk but it has been working fine for quite some time
and some other stick of DDR2
Turn the computer on and the mobo led lights up and all the fans start spinning but there's no display and no beep codes. I thought the mobo might have an older bios that doesn't support the q6600 so I tried an e2160, a cceleron D and an e8400 but none of them worked. Then I thought the integrated gpu might be busted so I put in some mid 2000's ati oem card but I still had the same problem. After some research I founf that the bios needs resetting and just taking the battery out isn't enough and that you also need to reset some jumpers. so after going through the process of resetting the jumpers a number of times I finally get some beep codes, I got 1 long and 2 short which means there is a memory issue on asus boards. so I tried 5 different sticks of ddr2 while repeating the bios reset with every stick. 4 of the sticks were in the list of supported memory for this board and should've worked. The stick I used were all different sizes: 256mb, 512mb and 1gb some of them are high density and some low and one of the sticks (low density 512mb) was working yesterday. but none of the dimms worked.
The display and vga cable are confirmed working btw.
What could be the problem and is it just chance that I have 2 busted boards?
Both boards were working 2 years ago and have been in a cupboard in the cellar. Temps go down to around freezing temps in the winter and don't go above 30 C during summer could this have harmed both boards?
