Sup fellow geeks,

Recently I bought myself an ASUS MG279Q and right off the bat I ran into what feels like loads of problems. Below is a list of all the problems that come to mind and below that is a list of things I've tried in order to solve these problems. Feel free to pick your flavor!

1. I can only get a 120Hz refresh rate even though the monitor can do 144Hz

2. Whenever the monitor shuts down or goes into power-saving mode, windows loses connection to the monitor and the desktop is reset (annoying because I have a multi-monitor setup)

3. Sometimes when I launch games (only TF2 I think) the monitor locks itself into 60Hz and everything feels sluggish, by which I mean it feels like the response time goes up to >50ms or something

4. Sometimes when launching games (only TF2 I think) the monitor goes blank and all sound stops playing. I think this might be the graphics driver crashing.

Relevant specs (let me know if you want me to add something):
Graphics card: Gigabyte GTX 680 4gb
Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth Z77

So here's what I've tried to do in order to solve the different problems:

1:

* I've tried using two different cables, the mini-displayport -> displayport that came with the monitor, as well as a Deltaco displayport cable. Both are of version 1.2 and I've set the monitor to use 1.2.

* Made a custom resolution in the nvidia control panel, nothing happened (no new resolutions or refresh rates are listed)

* I've confirmed that the monitor can handle 144Hz through some monitor diagnostics software

2:

I have no idea what to do in order to solve this, it's not a major problem but I would prefer it if there's some solution that doesn't involve turning off the monitor's power-saving mode.

3:

Whenever this happens I unplug the displayport cable for a minute and then plug it back in again. I got this solution from a forum thread somewhere, and according to the one who mentioned the solution the graphics card needs time to charge capacitors needed to output >60Hz.

However according to the same person this should only be needed once, whereas in my case I need to do this about every fifth time I launch TF2 because that's when it happens. But the "solution" has had an impact as the monitor (unlike before) always runs at 120Hz when I launch windows.

4:

I press the physical reset button 🙁

Again, feel free to pick your flavor.

MAybe try, CRU, custom resolution utility. http://www.monitortests.com/forum/Thread-Custom-Resolution-Utility-CRU

I never found much luck in making any resolutions in the GPU's control panel, but CRU lets me get 34hz out of my 30hz 4K tv, or 120hz out of it as well. AMD doesn't include those resolutions, but I can play BF4 at vsync 120fps all day on it, and the difference between 30hz and 34hz for desktop smoothing is worth it.

Solution
For the desktop resetting, this was happening to me all the time with using the display port with multi-monitors and Win7.

What fixed this problem for me was installing the monitor's driver for it. When I was looking, the monitor was installed as a 'Generic PnP Monitor' in the graphic card setting for windows.
Control Panel -> Display -> Screen Resolution -> Advanced Settings -> Monitor. Under there the Monitor Type was the Generic PnP Monitor, i installed the monitor's driver from there and have not had the desktop issue. (This is the only spot that it would keep the driver installed, otherwise my system seemed to revert the driver back to the generic plug and play one 🙁 )

One reason is with Win7 the EDID is screwed from what I have seen/read. Other EDID fixes can help if the one that helped me did not.

I didn't mean to press "Select as best answer", please carry on boys.

Also I tried updating the display drivers but a message tells me that the generic php monitor already has the latest drivers installed.
