Multiple monitors to laptop using USB displaylink issues

Right now I have a Dell Inspiron running with a GTX 960m and an i7. I currently have 2 monitors connected up to a USB Targus hub, which can handle the monitors. (1 monitor is going in VGA and the other HDMI), with both going into the laptop(which is shut and out of the way). Effectively making it a workstation.

My problem is when I decided to move my laptop back onto my desk so I could have a third screen if I wanted to open up my laptop, so I went to Best Buy and grabbed a USB 2.0 extension cable. I plugged everything in and it worked fine browsing and videos and such(with just the 2 monitors). The port on the laptop is 3.0 as well as the Targus hub. When I booted up any game that was graphically demanding, the monitor I was playing on had latency issues, which I didn't have when using the 3.0 direct connection without the 2.0 extender.

I trust DisplayLink and know that it can handle the 2 monitors, as well as my 960m and the processor.

So my question is, do you guys think my problem is the 2.0 downgrade in the cables, or the distance itself? I want to troubleshoot this myself, but I don't want to just go and buy a 3.0 USB if that won't fix the latency issue. I'm almost certain that is the issue(switching from the 3.0 all the way connection, to adding the 2.0 extender), as I've heard that the difference is astronomical, especially when you need every last bit of speed.

I would appreciate any help someone could give me.

Solution
USB 3.0 has a lot more bandwidth than 2.0 remember that when you have individual connections it might not matter much but when you are sharing a USB hub with 2-3 monitors a 2.0 extension cable won't provide enough juice.

try using an all USB 3.0 topology or find a hub that provides higher bandwidth.

I'm guessing this is your connection:
PC USB >> 2.0 extensions cable >> 3.0 hub >> monitors.
